1995 U280 at PPL ( back in 2010)

Does anyone remember this one? I found mention of it in the forum archives. The "hotrod" one with the "Jack Brake"..
Well, I know where it is now!
In my yard.
I still don't know what a "Jack" brake is, other than a decal with Jack Maxton's now disconnected phone number on it. If anyone knows anything about it? I would like to hear from them. I plan on disconnecting the propane setup, don't like it being there even though the valve has been turned off since 2010. The PO before me (2010-2015) has put about 7000+ miles on it, we have put only 800 in the last month. It runs fine, starts easy, plenty of power, no smoke or heating problems. Servicing all the fluids now.
We felt it was a good price for the potential it has, only paid half of what PPL had it listed for back in 2010.

Glad to hear you are enjoying your coach, FourTravelers!

We still need photos of the new-to-you coach, many of them...we LIKE photos.

Not familiar with the term "Jack Brake".  There is a "Jake Brake", and there are "Jacobs" brakes, and "Pac" brakes.  Try Googling those terms.

I believe you made a wise choice in acquiring a U280, but then I'm prejudiced!  8)

That little sliding lever on the box makes me wonder if it is some kind of a trailer brake controller?

Here is the control for the exhaust brake on our U280.  As you can see, it is simply a "ON-OFF" switch.

This  is a Toad brake, nothing to do with coach engine.

Thanks John! The knowledge base on this forum is amazing..............
Old Jack..... referred to in the article is Jack Maxton, the previous owner of our coach. I guess he built his own Toad brake, we knew he had a commercial radio/CB business, so it makes sense that he had the experience and components to build one. He must have had some knowledge of diesel engines also based on the "tinkering" he has done on the 8.3 ISC.
I am still trying to figure it all out. I have tried calling but his phone has been disconnected.

Removed the propane injection today.
Next item - there is a vacuum operated damper device on the hot side of the turbo, some type of exhaust brake?
Will attach photos later, can't seem to post them with the iPhone.

If bolted to the turbo (not part of it) then it may be an  exhaust brake.  And, if so AIR PRESSURE activated, not vacuum.

PacBrake and Jacobs are popular brands of exhaust brakes.

But, with the transmission retarder, kind of a "not needed" item.

It's probably the waste gate, not an exhaust brake.

That would certainly make more sense.

Crawled in the engine compartment for a closer look and the ID tag on the turbo states that it's a re-man Holset HX40. I believe this turbo comes with a external waste gate. Now I just need to determine if it's working correctly or I could be getting too much boost. Does anyone know what the max boost should be?
Also what should the normal and max EGT be?
I should probably be posting this in the Tech forum anyway.

We have a Banks Stinger on our 1997 C8.3-350. The absolute max boost I see is 28 psi. The usual top boost level is about 26 psi. The previous owner's notes indicate that absolute max EGT is 1400F. I have seen 1300F a few times, but generally I don't let it go over 1250F. Dropping a gear and easing the throttle will bring down EGT, and I consider the drop in speed insignificant. EGT at idle is about 300F. Cruising on relatively flat ground at 65 mph will give EGT in the 600-900F range.

Cat school always claimed 1400f before the turbo, 1200f after the turbo as absolute MAX, but do the happy thing. With a good CAC, those temps are elusive unless more fuel has been turned on.

Those are the same numbers that I see on the EGT, but we live in flat Florida. I am sure they will be higher out west. The max boost that I have noticed was about 30psi accelerating up some overpasses. Normally it runs 3 to 9 psi and I haven't yet used the cruise control.
Thanks for the reply!
