U280 Transmission Quit Shifting

The new owners of our previous motorhome, a 95 U280, are stuck along side I-25 in New Mexico. After they stopped for lunch, "reverse" worked but when "drive" was selected, a warning bell came on and it would not engage. After that, "R"  quit working, too.
I've never experienced that so I could not help them directly.

Has anyone else experienced this or have an idea what the problem could be?

Well, lots of things could be going on. #1, What is the fluid level.?? #2, If fluid level is OK (checking HOT in "N") were there any shift issues before this happened i.e.; slow shift when cold, excessive rpm during shift from gear to gear. ?

 5 or 6 spd.??

Depending on the model, check fault codes either with the under the dash switch or on the shift pad.

If under the dash, engage the switch with the key on and read the flashing light bulb for the codes.

Floor mat stuck under the throttle pedal?  Won't go into gear if idle speed too high.

Is air pressure normal?

Is the HWH "Travel" light illuminated?  I don't think it will go into gear if it is not.

Check the travel light first.  That is usually the culprit

It turned out to be something simple, a loose connector on the back of the shift pad. They are on the road again.
