Sharp R-1874 OTR Micro/Conv install

Does anyone know why Foretravel put 3 inch by 1.5 inch (like two by fours) wood behind the OTR Microwave? This moved the OTR Microwave three inches away from the wall and toward someone cooking using the cook top. The instruction which came with the replacement Sharp R-1874 OTR Micro indicate attaching unit to a 2x4 stud wall with drywall ( zero clearance). Nothing is said about mounting on wood panelling. I would like to remove this spacer and attach OTR Micro against the wall to provide a clearer view of the cook top. This will require finishing a small patch of (3 inch by 3 inch) Walnut cabinet which will become exposed.

Wyatt - our coach is the same year and model as yours.  I don't recall any wood between the wall and the old microwave when we replaced it.

Fascinating, my build is 4943 and is also a WTBI floor plan. I see by the picture that you have wall paper behind the microwave, while I have wood panelling.
Foretravel went to white vinyl wall covering instead of walnut panel to make interior brighter circa 1997.

Thanks for this info!

We have wood behind our microwave but no two-bys, just panels.

Wyatt,

I have build #4970 and no wood behind microwave. Don't know if it is original or not. Have white vinyl paper behind it also. We might be able to narrow down when the change took place.

I have never seen one mounted like you described, might have been done by the previous owner to be able to reach inside easier

We replaced our microwave last year. There were no wooden spacers behind our old unit. My guess would be that the spacers were added for some kind of ventilation, maybe.

Does the spacing allow the vent on top to line up better with the roof vent duct?  That is, if yours is vented out the roof.  If so, maybe the current oven is not the original model and whoever did the swap used the spacers to make the 2 line up (rather than modifying the ducting)?

The OTR Sharp conv micro being replaced, I believe is the original because many other folks have posted the same model number.
The 2x4 wood behind the micro, which moved it away from the wall about 3 inches, I believe is original because my build number (4943) was written on both sides, and I have seen pictures posted by others when replacing their micro. The pictures were taken with the micro removed and clearly showed the same 2x4 blocks. If I can find the pictures in the archives I will post it here.

The removed OTR micro had the fan exhaust at the top front, blowing up, which would be blocked by the upper cupboards without the 2x4 blocks.
