Temp Coat or paint with glass at Extreme

I am presently at Extreme to have my roof painted and have the choice between Temp Coat or paint with glass beads.  I have a couple major cracks to be repaired as well as quite a few hairline cracks.  My main objective is to stop further cracking and prevent any water intrusion.  I am leaning towards the Temp Coat as it is thicker and more flexible and possibly a little more heat reflective which could help with the expansion and contraction.  I would appreciate any input before making a final decision.

Depends on the reflectivity whether it would be any different.  Thickness difference between it and paint is not enough to make one iota of a difference. 

LOTS for prior discussion of this on the forum if you search for roof coating, including some links to outside analysis and calculations.

One of the thicker "wonder" roof products we saw in person did not seem to be durable enough to routinely scrub for cleaning.  Soft enough that pressing my fingernail into it permanently damaged it.

We had our roof done by Xtreme with the high-gloss white paint with silica in it.  Non-skid enough to be safe but not so gritty that it is difficult to clean.  That was 5 1/2 years ago and we are still Xtremely (pun intended) happy with it and recommend it.

Bingo.  White gelcoat is about as reflective as anything else.  If you're concerned about ongoing cracking of the roof surface even after repairs, you might consider having a white elastomeric surface rolled on.  It will bridge cracks, and stretch rather than fracture.  Watertight as a frogs patukus. This is probably the soft stuff Michelle was talking about.  It will hold dirt worse than the slick gelcoat.  Typical high grade elastomeric paint costs about 150 bucks per 5 gal pail, multiply this times six or ten if buying from an RV supply place.  Not beautiful, but effective and durable and inoffensive if carefully applied.  It can be top coated with gloss enamels to approve appearance and reduce dirt holding abilities.

Elastomeric is my idea if I was needing it.

Thank you all for your input.  From your input and further reading I have decided to go with the paint and if there are any more cracks I will coat them with elastomere.

We also had our roof done at Xtreme with paint (white) and glass beads, and it's been great.  Not hard to clean, not slippery when wet, and holding up quite well.

Temp Coat is overstated, as there is no thermal protection, except for reflective, which is similar to white paint.  If one wants to clean their roof, paint with UV & no-slip glass beads, and don't choose rolled on Temp Coat.
We had Xtreme use paint mixed with UV & glass beads on our roof.  Paint can be very slippery without some non-slip feature.  Cindy monthly keeps our roof clean with a bucket of water mixed with a capful of Maguire's car wash soap and wet micro fiber cloth rag.  A clean roof keeps the sides cleaner.

+1 for Xtreme roof paint with glass beads !!! That being said roof work isn't as visible as paint and body work - so hard to say if Xtreme is better than other options. But for paint and body work, hard to beat Xtreme

Thank you again for all for your input.  Makes me realize I made the right decision going with the paint option.

The price for the paint option is $1700 where the Temp Coat is $2300 as it is more labor intensive because it is rolled on.

They finished all the prepwork yesterday and it is scheduled for painting today.

Everyone at Extreme is a pleasure working with, James, Rance, Greg, Kristen and Jennifer have been so helpful and willing to answer any question you may have.  I have been very impressed with the prep work and fiberglass work that has been done to this point, they have so much pride in their work and take the time to do things right.  I am looking forward to seeing the finished job.

If Cindy keeps the roof clean does she get up there and if so how did you talk her into that? My wife won't even watch me climb up to wash it. I tell her that if her back is turned and she hears a scream followed by a thump it's me, if it's followed by a splash it's the bucket and needs to be refilled. :))

2 years ago it was about $1,500, but we probably saved some (hah! :D ) by having the whole outside of the coach remanufactured at the same time...

I hesitate to ditto again what others said, and you have decided, but the paint silica coating has been great product for all reason already given.  One of the first and best upgrades we have done.

At that time i took bids from FOT and Xtreme and solutions they offered were different.  Am confident I made right choice.....more confident being on roof and i do not like being up there anyway and DW cannot, stopped the gray/white chalking runoff, looks great still after three years.

I did not however have any cracks in the roof.  I am sure Rance has explained to you the potential problems at the "step on pad" on the roof at the ladder.  This work you will have will solve that, another good plus.

You will be pleased i think.

For anyone considering this, I am not sure what FOT used around 2010 but it should be noted that what they called "armor coat" or something of that nature which looks almost like an FRP type texture is not a savior or anything.  While it's very tough, if the fiberglass cracks underneath the armor coat cracks right above it.  These roofs, at least ours, DOES have a few minor cracks here and there as did our Winnebago. 

I would recommend to any and all of you to thoroughly wash the roof once a year, and get down on your hands and knees and look for cracks front to rear.  If you find them early, there will be no damage. 

Unless these coatings are very elastic I suspect they would be subject to the same stresses and crack.  We've also had leaks at the nonskid surface in front of the ladder, search light, skylight, clearance lights, and window gaskets so those things at minimum should be inspected on a regular basis.  The search light you would only see evidence of leaks from inside so I'd recommend hunting around inside for that.

The plus side is that even when a leak does occur, when caught it seems to do no damage whatsoever.  On our old winnebago the fiberglass on the roof immediately delaminated all over the place.  It was a miracle that thing stayed together.
