Microwave Replacement

Today was install a new Samsung Convection Microwave.  Easy, after figuring out how to get the old Sharp out.  Then the challenge of installing the new.  The paper template was wrong, by inches on where to drill the hanging bolt holes.  We found that out after the first time I raised the oven front to secure it.  Three tries later, with new holes in the correct position to match the top of the case, we had all the mounting screws tight.

They say the thing only weights, 75#, and after doing the lift up and then down, I think it sure weights more.  But  the design matches the new Samsung dutch door refer sitting next to it.  It is quiet, and has some nice modern features not on the 18 year old Sharp.  We are back to having an oven again, so all is good.

We looked at a number of different brands, and not all doors work the same.  But the Samsung unit does not get but maybe a 1/8" wider with the door open.  Some units get 1/2" or more wider due to the door hinge design.

In addition, the actual rough in space is 1/4" wider than is needed, and on our coach there is a piece of walnut trim on the refer wall side.  I mounted the unit, tight to the sink side like Foretravel did the original unit.

Dave,

What was the model number of the Samsung you used?

Thanks,

Over here now, should have posted my model number in the first post.  I did just edit that reply, before reading the comment by Michelle.  I should have known better, shame on me.

So the model is Model # MC17F808KDT.  Note there is a less expensive model, with the controls on the door, instead of on the right side of the front.  I have not seen that other model to look at the door swing hinge design.

If you are removing a Sharp Carousel, know there are some bolts that took me a while to find.  Every microwave I have ever mounted, had a rear hanging lip bracket on the wall, and then had drop down thru the overhead shelf bolts.  The Sharp, had the rear wall bracket, the height of the unit.  Foretravel had install 4 screws thru the front top case into the cabinets.  But the unit has two long 14+" bolts that are hidden inside the bottom front of the unit, behind the grease screens.  These long bolts angle thru the unit to the back wall mounting bracket hardware.  I did not have any paperwork on the old unit and the net provided a very simple drawing, and the long bolts were not evident.

The template mounting holes were incorrect.  Since the paper is the first thing out of the box, and the unit is dumped out on it's top, I never thought to double check my work, holes against the unit.
