adding a power cord reel

One of the reasons I've put off adding a power cord reel is figuring out how to connect it - I figure the Marinco 50 Amp wall connector wires go directly to the ATS, so I would have to source a connection box.
Then I thought - why not just move the Marinco connector on my cable (or pick up another) to the pigtail for the power cord reel? That way, should there ever be an issue with the reel, I can just use a spare cable. I have a molded 15 foot extention, a spare 25 foot Marinco yellow cable, and the 30+ foot ebay special I'm using currently. I'm certainly tired of muscling the cord...

My electrical guru buddy intensely dislikes sliding connector ring cord reels.

He prefers the harder to install glendinning unit I shoehorned into mine.

No space for a hose reel and the glendinning has to be turned sideways.

But no slip ring

This is what I used on my 95, Dave. I ran the cord through the wall vent cover. Better to cut a hole in the wall and plug in a couple of grommets. Of course, you can't beat the price of your idea! You will really enjoy this upgrade. Good luck.

I did the same when I put the Glendining power cord reel and water hose reel. It actually has a number of advantages over hard wiring. No need to put out the heavy duty 50 amp cord when driveway camping or hooking up to a 30 amp post. I will often use our 25' 30 amp cord with a pigtail adapter. It is very easy to coil up and stow because it is so much thinner. Or with a 15 or 20 amp connection, I just use a different adapter. No need to add the 36' of power reel cord into the equation in that case. Also, if there is ever a problem with the power cord reel, very easy to bypass. You could have the best of both worlds by using the 50 amp manual transfer switch referenced in a different recent thread to switch between the two shore power inlets and I may do that at some point because I like the idea of not having to plug and unplug that Hubble connector any more than necessary.

I also wanted the other type of Glendinning reel that uses a bucket to store any cord without sliding contacts, but there just isn't room unless I relocate it to the storage compartment that I put in behind the drivers side rear wheel. I wanted to have the water hose reel as well as sewer hose storage in the same compartment. I did some research on the sliding contact version and found that it is pretty robust. the biggest caution is not to move the reel when drawing high current, so I make it a policy to not move the real without turning the pole breaker off first. If it fails down the road, I will revisit the idea.

Thanks Jor. Since I had the entire wet bay gutted for the bulkhead repair, it wasn't that much more work to redo it the way I wanted then to put it back the way it was. I suppose there are worse things to be know for... ::)

jor, Don seems to have ~most all~ of the categories on a FT locked up... ^.^d
