What is this? - answer: transmission fluid cooler

Sorry, the picture is rotated.  Correct orientation is with the blue tarp at the bottom of the picture.  (I can't figure out how the picture got rotated when I uploaded it.)

This device is part of the Cummins ISL engine on my 2004 295.  It is mounted on the passenger side above the skid plate. Its a cylinder and has pipes in and out of the radiator area.

FWIW... I'm guessing a engine or transmission oil cooler.

Looks like the cooler for the retarder,follow the lines and see where they go.

It makes sense to be a cooler because the pipes do go to the radiator area - I'll have to look again to see if they connect to a dedicated smaller radiator.  But I don't understand what the big cylinder is for.  Its over a foot long and 4 -5 inches in diameter.  Is there the need for this large a reservoir of transmission fluid?
