Continuing LP issues

Thought I'd break this out from the Q discussion...

After getting Roland's help with my LP system in Q we we're pretty confident we have it solved except for the small leak around the packing on the shutoff valve.  (see Quartzite 2016 thread) It is small enough that it could be ignored until we had used up all our propane.

We left Q yesterday heading for Aho. I smelled LP a couple of times and opened the propane bay a couple of times to inspect. Everything seemed good. Got to our site at the campground and LP smell turned really bad. Checked the bay again. Still looked good and just happened to put my hand next to the high side of the regulator. Felt a pretty healthy stream of LP coming out. Immediately shut off propane. No electric for my hot water heater. I've never hooked it up. Yes it's on my todo list. :) It may have just moved up a notch. The whole purpose of coming here was to sit and do laundry. We do have little electric heaters and it only got to 50º last night so no fear of freezing.

Pulled the regulator this morning and talked to Mike Leary (in the same campground). He advised to talk to the camp host who pointed me to the resident "RV guy". He didn't have a regulator but said to check the IGA in town. The IGA has an Ace Hardware in it! I wondered through the LP section which was geared to extension hoses, adaptors, 1lb LP tanks, and BBQ stuff. :( Then I spied it! A 2 stage regulator for a Mr. Heater. On visual inspection looked like it would work and at this point I would have paid twice the price of $31.99. Got it home installed and we have fire again!

So now I'm watching the game, drinking a beer on the couch, and will probably get a shower in later.

Sometimes you get lucky! :)

I would when you have a chance to replace that one with an oem one that is right for your coach, but at least no more leak. Good work.

So ken, are you on your way down here to San Carlos to join the Mexican Q?? There are 2 in the park next to where we are parked ( Wayne Macauley and Wyatt Sabourin) and weather is between 75 and 85f every day. A 7 hr drive from Ajo and all you need is some Mexican Ins to cover vehicles. We leave here around 7th and will be heading to Q to see friends and Brad (another friend of course) then to Don and Tys's then up Calif coast to home. SO???

@Roland

Me too!

BTW: I asked the RV guy here & he told me the flare fitting with the metal/screen/mesh/whatever was a check valve! Don't think the location merited a check valve?? Can't see LP coming back that direction.

Ken, your passport has expired??? What do you do if you suddenly want to go out across border or fly to Europe or Asia, I cannot imagine being without one, in fact I have 2.

Ken,

Verify that the regulator you have is calibrated for 11 column inches of water.

Also that the vent (small screened area) is pointing DOWN-- this is critical.

Vents on the long axis are for regulators installed vertically.

Vents perpendicular to the long axis of the regulator are for horizontal installations.

Prices are generally the same, but they are NOT interchangeable.

Glad that worked out, Ken. Pretty crazy (and lucky) you found a regulator at a IGA food store! Hope Dori is feeling better, I know you are. Now we can drink some beers and relax.  ^.^d

Ken,

Verify that the regulator you have is calibrated for 11 column inches of water.

One of the new Camco regulators that I purchased was set for 15 inches of water so checking the set pressure is important.
