Water Heater Works with Propane, but Only Partime with Electric

Our Hot Water System appears to work fine with propane.

This morning, we decided to try the electric system. It worked fine, so we left it on. Tonight, we had no hot water. Is there something about the electric water heater that shuts it off after a period on nonuse?

Any other ideas about this problem?

Thanks,

The electric water heater should not shut off when not used.  I'd check that it's getting ac power.  Is the breaker on or off?  What is your source of ac power? Is it still there?

Heater elements and thermostats can also both fail.  They can be replaced but may require the heater to be at least partially removed to access.  Doable but not real easy to slide the heater out.
