Dometic NDR1492 Hinge Repair Kit

Some time ago there was an article in BeamAlarm regarding a hinge repair kit for the Dometic NDR1492. Please be advised if your Dometic Refrigerator is a NDR1492-B or NDR1492-S, the repair kits will not fit. The Dometic NDR1492-B refrigerator was installed by Foretravel in some models around 2004-2007. These models have the black painted stainless steel doors. My freezer bottom hinge failed and after researching, I found the hinge repair kit. After ordering and receiving the kit, It would not fit. The parts department at Dometic informed me that there is no hinge repair kit for the NDR1492-B with the stainless steel doors.

Larry,

Someone posted a 'rescue type' refrigerator door hinge repair last year. You might search on this forum or on Beam Alarm for that information. Maybe a member will chime in with the URL.

Traveling Man,

There really is not a hinge per se on the Dometic NDR1492-B or the Dometic NDR1492. There is a plastic hinge bushing pressed into a hole in the bottom of the refrigerator or freezer doors. The plastic on the bottom of the doors cracks or breaks allowing the plastic hinge bushing to be pushed farther up into the door rather than resting against the door on the hinge bushing flange. For a better explanation read the article in BeamAlarm in the refrigerator section.

Craneman,

Yes, an epoxy such as Bondo will work to repair the enlarged hole that holds the plastic hinge bushing. However, the metal plate used by Barry will not fit my refrigerator. I am making a metal plate to cover the bottom corner of the refrigerator to support a new plastic bushing.

The original post was to alert owners of the NDR1492-B refrigerators not to order the Dometic hinge repair kit because it will not fit the NDR1492-B.

Is the problem only associated with the stainless steel door model 1492?

The instructions provided with the Dometic hinge repair kit says it is applicable for the NDR1062, NDR1292, NDR1492, RM1272, RM1282, RM2652, RM2852, RM3662, RM3663, RM3862 and RM3863.

As far as I know, the two stainless steel door models are NDR1492-S and NDR1492-B. The NDR1492-B is painted black. The hinge repair kit will not fit on the NDR1492-B.

When I ordered the hinge repair kit I thought my refrigerator was a NDR1492. After the hinge repair kit would not fit my door I looked at my refrigerator manual and realized that I have a NDR1492-B.

I went and checked the hinges on my 1492 (wood door insert) and they look brand new, with no signs of fatigue.

I searched online and found nothing but horror stories concerning almost all models of Dometic reefer hinges failing,
a lot being recently posted, so I decided to order 2 sets and went shopping.  Everyone I contacted wanted
$45.00 - $46.00 per set with one exception;
Dometic Refrigerator Beige Door Hinge Repair Kit - Refrigerator Parts -...

I asked for a little discount as I was buying two sets and Dyer's gave me a price of $34.00 per, and $9.86 shipping.

Thank you Larry for this thread and I hope someone else here on the forum can benefit from my price shopping.
