Dish TV Receiver

Not sure this is the correct place to ask but I have a question.  As some of you may know I am in the process of selling my motor home.  My question is..............Does the satellite TV service provider always require that you remove and return the installed receiver?  Seem like an unnecessary requirement but the person I spoke with at Dish insist the receiver be removed and returned.

If they provided it then sent it back.  The next owner can get a new one if they want.  Even if you buy your own they will try to claim it is theirs.  We bought our own DirecTV everything.  Pretty much what you have to do for a mobile account.

We went through that process a couple of times with Directv.  When we bought our coach we took one of our son's receiver boxes and used his account and his access card.  Later he cancelled his service.  Although DTV did not require the return of all of his boxes they were not active, able to transmit received signal.  Through numerous phone calls by me we were able to get DTV to overwrite the previous owners, my son's, information:  Name, address, billing information to our information and place it on the Access Card in the machine.  DTV said that the box is their property as is their access card and must be returned.  With the new DVR came a new Access card.  The previous Access card was returned via self addressed envelope and they requested that we recycle the no longer needed box.

I think the easiest way is to contact DTV and advise them that the box is in you RV that you are selling and ask them for direction and offer your next owner a pathway to reactivate service.

Keep in mind that we have not found DTV to be RV friendly and they do not especially like making service calls to RVs because the dish and box are usually provided by different manufactures.  DTV techs only work on DTV equipment. 

Recently we were told by our DTV service tech that part of our new dish prevented the box from working properly and advised that he could do nothing until that part was replaced.  I contacted the Dish manufacturer, Winegard, spoke with one of their techs, he performed diagnostics and confirmed that the box was NFG.  Upon Calling DTV back and retelling the events they sent out a replacement box that worked - no questions asked.  The DTV tech told us that about 30 days ago they were told to make no service calls to RVs.

This is just our recent experiences and is not necessarily indicative of what is really happening out there.

Just because you own the dish and receiver, it is the Access Card that really matters, and transferring ownership of the hardware does not necessarily mean that the card is also transferable and useable.  Just my experience.

BTW - DTV provided us with the upgraded DVR for free.  We do pay extra for HD and the ability to record programming.

At least in the past, Dish will not activate a receiver for a different customer.  If, when you cancel the service, they want it back, you must return it or there will be a charge.  If they don't want it back, in our experience it will be useless to anyone else.

Dish will re-activate a receiver to a different client if it's one of the newer units with the plastic card. AND, here's the kicker, you have to own it! A "freebie" receiver they want back, not caring about the dish. The receivers are cheap, ($100.00) and then it's easy to change billings.

Both of my Dish receivers were purchased off ebay. I made sure to purchase units that had not been registered before. I later found out that the individual I purchased from was a dealer. I also made sure that Dish knew the receivers were owned by me. Even after doing that when I checked my profile online the receiver(s) showed as rentals. I had to talk to a supervisor and email them a copy of my receipt from ebay before they would change the ownership.

If I know I need a technician at the coach I always look for a local satellite guy. Usually they have cards at the office in the campground for one or more local guys. I've had several of these guys at the coach over the years and everyone bent over backward to do everything they could to satisfy me. Making up cables (2 50 footers for my carry out dish), gave me a usb network adaptor, provided flat coax cable to pass through a window, etc, etc. I seems these guys are independent agents and get rated by the satellite company on customer satisfaction and they take it pretty serious. All of them requested me to give them a 10 rating if the satellite company called to do a survey. :) The ones I've worked with earned a 10!

I do first try to get any issues resolved with Dish tech support if possible but if I can't get anywhere with them I'm calling the local guy.

Getting back on track to the topic/question that was asked in the first post, the answer is whatever Dish tells you must be done when you call to cancel service for your specific receiver, not what someone on the Internet tells you is OK  ;)

Yup, I just talked to DISH on the phone before posting, so what I said is from a very helpfull woman.
