Bay Door Interior Plastic Covers

As Mark pointed out, there is a plastic cover on some of the bay doors. This is fairly thin plastic, and seems to be held together with rivets. Because of the nature of thin material, and the closeness to the edge of the rivets, some of mine have come loose. The biggest problem is one of the passenger side bay doors. It is so loose that when the road gets a little rough, it really starts to make a large banging noise.
 
What is the purpose of the plastic cover? I assume it has something to do with protecting the latch cables from shifting bay contents. Is it really needed?
 
What is the best way to make a long term fix for the ones that have had the rivets pull through the edge of the plastic?

I used 1/8th" flat washers not as big as a fender washer but much bigger than the hole where the rivet pulled through. I thought of using the plastic rivets that hold fender wells on some cars but they were more expensive.

I take out the rivets and use self tapping Robertson screws about 1/2" long. Easy to remove if needed.

The problem I am having is where an end piece connects to the larger piece. It doesn't look like there is enough material thickness to hold a screw thread. Am I missing something? (That could be because it is pretty hard to get a good look at the mechanism in the full up position. Not sure I trust the DW enough to crawl in there with a flashlight and let her close the door.)  :-[
