Transmission service

I took my coach in for trans service, I vary rarely take my coach in for much, so I thought I would have trans serviced and lube, I was kind of shocked on the price when I picked it up, $807.43 , They said it took full Synthetic fluid at $49 a gallon and it took 10 gallons my book Approx 7 gallons, I called Allison dealer and ask about fluid and they said the fluid they put in was the best AUTSYN295 trans fluid and it is a good idea to use but 10 gallons seems excessive.  1996 U320 M11 cummings / Allison HD4060 trans

Do you have a retarder? That would account for more.

I could only get 34 Qts. in mine and I pulled all the plugs and the hoses to the Retarder cooler. There were 2 plugs facing the rear of the pan that may or may not have drained the converter that I pulled also.

I took my coach to an un named Foretravel approved service center and left it off. Tried to charge me for 24!!!! gallons of oil at $6 a qt or $24 a gallon. OK, they buy the stuff for less than $8 a gallon in bulk. Really don't mind them making money at $16 profit a quart, although seems a bit excessive. Looked up in the manual and showed the Service manager the capacity of the engine (as I recall around 10.x gallons in my ISM.)  Showed him the number in the manual and asked to see the 14 gallon oil slick that had to be where my coach was sitting when they filled it. He promptly got the bill changed. One of many discrepancies from that service event, a few of which like the above example which were egregious.

SO I think you ave a credit due for the 3 gallons.

Tim,

While you could easily buy Dexron for $24/gallon, I would love to know where you could buy Transynd (the better, synthetic ATF) for close to that.

Did they fill with Dexron, Transynd or something else?

I believe he is referring to engine oil.

no!  sorry to not be clear. I was talking engine oil, not transmission oil.  they charged me $6 A QUART (not by the gallon) or $24 a gallon for engine oil (10-40 Shell Rotella I think it was).  $14 a gallon at Walmart that day.  $8 or so a gallon in bulk. So I could live with the profit margin on the oil (which the service manager thought was too high), but the parts Deprt. was responsible for trying to charge me for 24 GALLONS of engine oil in an engine that held 10.7 gallons (all from memory, so if I am off by a bit on the capacities, forgive me, but basically that is what the attempt was to charge me.)  Lots of folks just pay the bill and drive off, if that had been me, I would have been badly taken advantage of on this line item and 2-3 others.

Was eventually resolved, but it seemed that it was SOP for this firm, and supported or incented from the top.

I just wrapped this up. I was able to get 7.5-8 gallons in the hd4060. Filters stamped 10/95. I believe someone forgot to ever get this serviced.

Tim, I think the Shell  10W-40 is their synthetic oil, Walmart price would be fr the 15W-40.regular Rotella T.  I think.
I think.
