Re: Play in Steering
Was in NAC and was going to replace my Sheppard box. Already had Bern at world line motors work on everything that was loose on the front end except steering box
Keith Ritsch at MOT drove the coach and said it would be better if the toe was set correctly - so he checked the ride height and set the toe (maybe 1/16 toe out?) anyway, did a slight improvement.
Went to Bernd's. Had a rebuilt Sheppard from Redhead available, plus Bernd has a box he touts (Bernd's is supposedly a rebuilt with "progressive" steering, plus he feels his will last longer without play than the red head. Bernd's is about $1,800 for the box as I recall. In any event, labor would have been 8 hours to install either, approximately $800. So it would have been $1,200 to $2,600 to install a new steering box. Since the "play" was down to about 1/2" of a dead spot, opted to leave as is. If it gets worse, I will get it fixed down the road.
Bernd's guys jumped on my coach, worked their butts off in the heat, worked Saturday on a holiday weekend, and I am at this point happy with all that was done, the service, price and quality of the work.
Did his shop preload the wheel bearings?
