replacing toilet wax ring

I have a Microphor toilet in my coach.  My SO has a sensitive nose ( I can't smell much of anything) and complains of smelling the black tank at times.  I have narrowed the likely source to the wax ring on the bowl.  I have changed several wax rings in my homes over the years, but not in a coach.

My question is do I need to disconnect electric and water to the toilet before changing it; or is there sufficient slack in the connections to just unbolt and lift the bowl, to access the wax ring?

Anyone have advise?

I would shut the water off at the manifold and disconnect the line.  You may need to remove any old wax from the flange on the floor and the bottom of the toilet. I wonder if the Perfect Seal Wax Ring would be better than a regular wax ring

Most likely the one way vent of the black tank, not the wax ring.
If it is the wax ring and you have done it before, same on motorhome as sticks and bricks

Does Foretravel install wax or neoprene sales on the commode?

I don't recall a wax ring being used in rvs, all I have seen are rubber gasket. Other sources of black tank oders are vent fans on when flushing same as windows open going down the road when flushing.

Hi guys,

When I removed my Microphor to make some repairs I used a regular wax ring to reseat it. It sealed OK but some of the wax worked its way down to make the electric drain valve not seal completely. Whoa, that was a real problem....I had to remove the valve to clean the wax out. So be careful about using wax toilet rings. I suspect Foretravel does not use wax rings.

On an RV I'd think you'd want the rubber ring, if there is any movement (OF the stool) the wax will hold the shape of the deformities caused by the movements.

Thanks everyone for the information.  I will check/replace the vent valve as a first step.

The symptoms are odors while driving down the road, even without flushing the toilet.  Also odors with the vent fan running again without flushing the toilet.  No odors when vent fan running and a window opened.

If you are not using the coach much, make sure the traps in the shower & sinks are full of water.

Yes, I made sure of this.  She sniffed around.  Smells are coming from around the toilet.  Nothing from shower or around sink.

Where is the one way vent located in our coaches.  I have the same issue. I have a separate pot room and I have a cabinet behind the toilet.  Would it be in there?  What actually happens to the vent?  Does it stay stuck open?  Are they easily replaced?  Where do you buy them?  Sorry for the many questions.

In our coach there's one behind the toilet in the cupboard and another behind the washer dryer . Think there was a thread a while back about replacing them , I believe they were glued in place and were available from Amazon.
Please look through older posts as my memory is somewhat hazy

I think Michelle did a really good post and recommend Studor 20349 ABS valves.

John,  I found mine behind the toilet in the small cabinet.  You just reach down and a bit to the right of center of cabinet.  Mine unscrewed by hand, at least until I screwed it back on a little too tight.

I cleaned mine up a bit  and flushed it out.  Seemed to work better and no smells on the last leg of trip to Pine Island, FL.  I will replace it now that we are stopped for a couple of months.  Along with a few other chores.
