Gasket on a Fleetguard fuel filter

I hate changing fuel filters, I always worry about starting after changing so I do 1 at a time and let it run. This time the 1st filter by starter batteries and I changed the filter set up a few years back to a Raycor water separator unit and sense then I changed filter to Fleetguard filter It is a Fleetguad FS 19551 and the top rubber seal between filter and base wasn't sure which way it went in, The picture does not look correct so I installed it 1st time as per picture point to base and did not like it, so last time I did it point was toward filter so I pulled it off and turned It around. Here are some pictures. The reason I turned it toward filter it seem to fit better. Also the picture shows it in outer grove and no way it will go there.

Her is another picture this is point up and 2nd is the way I did it point into filter

Do it like the instructions. They do it for a reason and that reason is how the gasket deflects or bends under positive or negative pressure. One way it seals well, the other way it fails.

Looks like you need to roll it inside out so the taper looks like the picture.

What was the orientation of the seal you removed with the old filter?

I put old one on 1 1/2 years ago and don't know why but it was like 2nd picture bevel towards filter flat towards housing

If you would roll the seal inside out  the flat would go to the filter. The tapered edge would then be angled inward instead of outwards,just like the picture in the instructions

Seal should face base as per Fleetguard inner grove picture not great

Idea,I know Fleetguard is the so called Cummins brand but are there any brands out there that already have this gasket installed
in the filter canister,then you would'nt be going thru this.

I have been using Baldwin filters for years now- without the plastic cup base.  I can drain some fuel from the bottom drain valve easily if I need to, but the main advantage is that is simply spin on and spin off a solid filter- no messing around with the gaskets on the clear bowl.  My theory is that if I am having fuel issues I first check for water in the fuel, if not, I change the filter.  I get mine from Filterbarn.com at a very reasonable price. 

Just my opinion, but I like the KISS idea.
