What Is This Fuel Filter ?

What kind of a fuel filter system is this that I saw on a 2001 FT ? Believe that the small container indicates the amount of clog ?

It is a Winn. same as mine on a 1999 U320 Beam Alarm gives info on it. Some people don't like it and change it out.

I like the relocation that was shown in Beamalarm, .  Not only is it easier to access, but it is higher than the fuel tank.

Higher than the fuel tank is great IF you have a primer pump. If not, when you remove the filter, fuel will run all the way back to the tank, leaving you with 30+ feet of AIR in the fuel line.

If you want to install the fuel filter higher than the fuel tank, put a ball valve on the inlet side of the primary fuel filter to prevent this.

My 1996 also had this Winn fuel filter which I replaced because the purge pump was seized and the O rings on top and bottom of the clear bowl were leaking. I see air in the top of the clear bowl in your picture, so it looks to me like yours is leaking also. This will cause air to reach the injector pump. Push the purge pump button on the Winn control panel and pump will run for a few seconds and perhaps push air via return hose back to the fuel tank. I advise you to replace this Winn with a Racor fuel filter, water separator, purge pump combination before you experience "hard starts" with your engine. Many folks here have already done this replacement and it is well documented.

I've been considering the Davco 382 as a replacement on my '03. I want SOMETHING that will give an indication that the filter is plugging, instead of an imperceptible loss of power. This looked like a smaller unit than the Davco.

I have been running a Davco 382  7 micron filter now for several years with great success in place of the primary cat filter and 2 micron secondary cat filter. It is mounted above the fuel tank. There is a check valve on inlet side to prevent tank line draining. There is large clear bowl that you just look and see if it needs replacing. I pour clean fuel at top cap to prime, it goes into the pre-filtered side.Works great for me. You can get 2,7,10,25, and many other micron sizes from fleetguard or other manufactures to meet your demand. The Davco filter was put out by DD originally as a one filter system using a 2 micron filter.

Fred, how many miles do you generally get out of one filter? Sounds like a good filter.

Looks to be an excellent solution to changing filters when not needed, or not knowing they when they REALLY need changing. The only negative I see is Davco says the filter needs to be above the full level for it to properly work.

To hijack my own thread, yesterday I found that some here have installed a Filter Minder, like that on the air filter, made for fuel filters.  I ordered one yesterday.

I used a Filter Minder until I found it was a source of a hard to find air leak.  It never showed any filter plugging, so I guess my replacing fuel filters every 15,000 miles a waste of money.

The Cummins manual recomends 6000 miles. As many filter problems as we see on the forum and as cheap as the filters are to
me its just easy to change more often.

The filter minder is a good idea but, lets say you fill up and the minder shows good, then you take off in the morning and drive a
few hundred miles and after the first 100 the filter gets "plugged",then your driving the rest of the day with a semi plugged filter,
my point, buy a case of each one and carry spares, you'll use them anyway.

Oh, carry spares, I do !

Brett, what do you use now...nothing ? Where was your Filter Minder leaking? Was it a manufacturing defect, or damage during use/installation?

Now I use nothing.  It was leaking in the body-a small crack in the plastic.  I never find anything when I cut open my filters.  If you practice good fuel tank maintenance and only buy fuel at high volume stations, I guess you might never need filters.  Of course, I always carry spares.
