A GPS is limited by its programming and database; the developers work with what they have and cannot visit/survey everything. The database can contain things like approved truck/commercial routes, weight limit roads/bridges, and low clearances on commercial routes. Best practices for a new-to-you route would probably be to use Google street view and "drive" the route on your computer screen first, looking for potentially sticky situations.
