I May Have The Use Of A Pit

Just today my friend told me he may be able to get use of a pit in an indoor heated building. I am going to change the oil and install a Fumoto oil drain valve for future oil changes. I'm also going to secure my water hose reel that I removed to replace the hose. I purchased new ss bolts to replace the rusting old ones. I wanted to ask, there was undercoating over the old nuts. It felt rubbery when I pulled it off. Any suggestions what would be best. Can I just use a little can of automotive undercoating over the nut and bolt?

This happened so quickly I'm asking for suggestions. What additional things should I try to do if I do get use of the pit.

Thanks
Ed

Ed,

I would grease u-joints and drive shaft spline.
Clean slack adjusters, check over you guide pins, check brake pad thickness.
Look over air lines and hydraulic lines for chaffing and make sure they are properly tied up. Both front & rear.
Grease king pins, drag link, and ball joints.
Check your bulkheads both front & rear
Generally look for anything that appears out of place.
Have you changed the trans. filters lately?
Spray all air fittings with soap bubbles and fix any air leaks you may find

That should keep you busy most of a day

Make sure the bottom of the pit is ventilated cause any carbon monoxide is going to accumulate there. That's why they don't build that many mechanics pits anymore. Along with other fumes.

Ed,

Another thought or two.
I would find some aluminum plate (at least .080 thick ) and cut some backing plates (at least 4" square) for the hose reel hold down bolts.  If you have an electrical reel I would install backing plates on it's hold down bolts while I was that close.  Doing this will help to keep from cracking the fiberglass belly pan by spreading the load over a larger area.  Use good quality calk around bolt and under backing plates to help with water intrusion. Yes, I use automotive undercoating to double seal the area.

On edit:  After a couple of P/M's about exact placement of these backing plates, they are installed where the hold down bolt is exposed to outside or bottom of the belly pan.  The reason is that not all hold down bolts are through the basement metal frame structure.  If you get to mean with  pulling a hose or cable off the reel this will help  the very bottom exposed skin from cracking.
