Removing Atwood Furnace Exhaust

Both of my Atwood Furnaces have stopped working. I tried to remove the exhaust, but it is not interested. I removed the wing nut and washer. There is a slot at the back of the wing nut hole so that the chrome exhaust assembly can be moved straight out. I think I remember someone recently writing that you have to jiggle it to get it to slide out. I have searched for those instructions on the forum but have not found the right search terms.

Is there another step after removing the wing nut and washer to allow removal of the exhaust? I found a mud dobber nest around one of the wires and removed it. I suspect there might be more near the ignitor assembly, but need to get access to it.

Any suggestions?

Thanks,

Trent

Tim,

I do not think so. The rear furnace has not started at all this Winter. The front has worked several time and ran fine. I was working on the rear because it provides heat to the basement. The last couple of times I have turned on the front furnace, it has not come on, either.

My immediate goal is to get the exhaust assembly out to access the rest of it.

Hummed up regulator? Or are they both getting propane to the furnace?

Look carefully for a "hidden" screw or nut that you missed.  I've had both of ours apart, and don't remember there being any trick to it.

In Quartsite another forum member showed me how to service the furnaces. The exhaust tube on my front one was rusted in badly. Try spraying it with penetrating oil let it sit a bit, then just keep working with it. Only one fastener the wing nut holds it in.

I found the thread I could not find earlier. It is forum thread "Noisy Hydro Flamr (Atwood) Furnace." It includes a link to a YouTube video about replacing the motor. It clearly shows LOOSENING the wing nut, and then aggressively pulling the exhaust assembly. Will try again, with my government-trained, steely-eyed killer mentality.

Here's the manual.  See page 41 for parts blow-up.  Does look like just the one wing-nut holding exhaust tube on.

Something that confused me about Atwoods was the difference in the Dinosaur boards (which I like a lot) . I'd had the front furnace fail, ordered a couple of "Universal" boards, fine. Rear started getting antsy, so I threw in the spare, furnace still did not work. After a day (in between beer breaks) with the VOM, all power was fine, went to the dark side, of course, thinking the furnace would have to come out (gasp!). Being my age, the dark side is not an option until all else fails. On a whim, I threw the old Atwood board back in,
it fired, sorta. Called Dinosaur, nice people, explained the deal, gave them the model and serial # of the stern small furnace. Oops, I'd ASSUMED it was the same board for front and rear: not. Shipped me a fresh model, bingo!  ^.^d

You lose! Forgot to mention all the "experts" that gathered around with well-meaning "suggestions."  ::)
