Air cleaner orientation 8.3 mechanical

I'm admiring the air cleaner installation in this photo from classifieds, Steve and Ginny Hill's nice coach:

1996 U295 36' for sale. WTBI floor plan. 98,769 miles

For some reason the air cleaner on my coach is installed right behind the drivers side rear wheel, dominating that compartment.  Lots of extra piping involved, the one in photo is much more straightforward.  I'm wondering what the conical device installed between intake and cleaner is?  I'd like to set mine up like this if possible.  Anyone done it or know a reason it can't be done?

If anyone could take the time to open this link and look at the engine photo attached I would appreciate it.

That appears to be a Donaldson pre filter vortex air centrifuge. If that is what I see it spins moisture out of incoming air prior to it getting to the air filter.  Yes they are still available.

If you have enough room at your rear door there should be no reason you can't change yours.

If I was at home I would get you a part # for the air centrifuge that I have but we are on the road so it will be a while before I can help you with that. Steve can correct me if I am wrong as to what  we are looking at.

Chuck,

Called to see if my niece was home as she is house setting. No luck there.  Here is a link to what I am talking about. Look at page 189 if you at looking at the page count at the top left of the page or 177 if you are looking at the actual page numbers.
