Pro-Link 9000 for a 1993 DDEC II 6V92 DD info needed

 New member here -
 I have seen posts referencing this tool but have no clue about it ala do I need the unit itself, a special cartridge, cable, and connector - all separate to get it to work?  I have a ODB II scanner and this gizmo seem to be similar except it needs separate components vehicle specific?  If a link(s) could be posted as to what I need that would be wicked helpful.  Thank you -- Nick

You will need the Prolink itself and the DDEC II -III cartridge.You will also need the DDEC 2 adaptor plug. The prolink tool itself is used on all types of heavy trucks etc the correct cartridge is inserted for each application. In this case DDEC 2. The correct connector is plugged into the cord and into the vehicle. This lets you read and clear any codes and also look at engine parameters. Injector response times and change some some functions like tire size for speedometer etc. Ebay is probably your best bet

The DDEC I-II cartridge will also work. So, you are buying a reader with an open back. Lots of different cartridges will slide in and give all the data for Fords, Chevys, etc, etc. They are super cheap at about $10 each. The Detroit DDEC I-II or II-III cartridge may be more expensive, even a lot more expensive. The key words on ebay are, MPSI, Kent-Moore, Detroit Diesel, Snap-On, Nexiq. If you take your time, you should be able to get the case, reader, cartridge(s) for about $200 for everything. If the adapter is not included, it's less than $20, not the fortune some are trying to get for it. Same goes for the reader. One Pro-Link 9000 I purchased came with 2 DDEC cartridges and was only about $160. Also included several domestic cars too. Cartridges for Cummins and CATs are also available but I have not seen any reasonable. Snap-On is now the owner but they don't want to support the 9000 and only want to sell you a new $$$$ tool.

No big deal it it does not have the manual as several of us have electronic or hard copies and can send them. Extremely difficult to use without the manual but super easy to learn in just a few minutes when you have it.

Here is a link to a ebay search. Note the astronomical wishing prices on most of the items. Check a national Craigslist search also.

The Chinese also make a modern unit for not too much $$ but I'm not exactly sure which one will work and their info is difficult to figure out. Returning something across the globe is a pain also.

Very helpful.  After I started looking I see the are prices all over the place.
Here is what I am looking at now
The adapter:

I emailed this guy to see what cables/adapters he has to include. The price is low [for now]  but he is making up for it w/shipping..

About $10 is what the adapter is worth. Both mine came with adapters. Like I said, less than $200 will buy the whole package. Just don't be in a hurry. PM Jerry Maddux as he also got a couple of good deals. One member got the whole package for under $100 several months ago. Jerry is also the printer expert so you can print out your readings. I can PDF you the manual so you can get up to speed before you buy one.

These take ALL the mystery out of Detroits and in 5 minutes, you can do what took the old timers hours to do on the mechanical engines. The rest of the engine is not that much different than any other diesel for a competent mechanic.

You seem sharp w/this stuff so I will just use a saved search and watch out for one.  $450 seems like a lot and the other one is over $250 already counting shipping. Regarding sharing the manual - wow that would be great.  Is it a pdf?  Can you post it in the Files section or just email it to me - your call - and when ever you have a chance - no rush.  Thank you  -Nick

Got mine off Craigslist, Jerry found it and sent me the link, I took a gamble and it paid off. 100.00with shipping😁 love it still learning.

I was considering buying one of these but so far I haven't found anything that it can do that I need done. I've been at several shops that have them but every time they tell me their machine is read only and can't make the needed changes. A code from the manufacturer is needed to make changes and of course they only supply that code to licensed service facilities, like Stewart & Stevenson, W Williams, Clark Equipment and places like that... so that's why I haven't spent hundreds of dollars on this toy that isn't really a tool ...but I would if it could do stuff. If you go to an actual Detroit Diesel dealer who has the manufacturer's code they can do all kinds of stuff and will probably charge you less than buying one of these readers that can't do anything.

I should probably give an example of some things it can't do so people won't have a fit. It can't change the horsepower of your engine without the manufacturer's code. It can't load test the fuel injectors at full power on a chassis dynamometer, even if the shop has all the equipment except the code. It can't change the shift points on the Allison transmission or force the torque converter to stay locked up instead of constantly locking and unlocking on every little hill. It can test the fuel injectors unloaded at idle and at 1000 rpm, which is of limited usefulness because the injector will fail at maximum load at full throttle at 2000 rpm. There are other things it can't do but I haven't needed to do any of those things yet.

I was kind of surprised that the Freightliner shop didn't have one of these. They did have a laptop that could connect, but there were some settings that it couldn't change. They are an authorized Detroit service center, but apparently an engine this old doesn't come along often enough to warrant having one of these around. The laptop apparently works for everything else.

Knowing the error codes is the most important thing to have and that can obtained without a reader.  You just need to use the switch under the dash and count the blinks on the check engine dash light.  Foretravel documented how to do it quite well in the coach binders.

The Pro-Link 9000 is old hand held technology and very rugged.  It was a state of the art diagnostic tool designed for diagnosing the network of sensors on engines with an onboard computer like the DD6v92.  I'm not a mechanic but I find it very useful when running down the road or parked with the idle set at 1000 rpms for airing up before leaving, filling a tire, or cooling down the turbo. 

The first couple times I used it to clear the historical codes, check road speed, reset the trip data and check all the parameters including mpg and engine hours.  I saved enough in shop fees to easily pay for it. You can leave it plugged in and there is even a snapshot feature which can record data while driving and retrieved later for analysis. 

Just recently it came in handy when I was servicing my big air compressor and had to remove the head to change the unloader valves.  I lost a couple of gallons of coolant when disconnecting the lines to the compressor head and forgot about it.  A few days later I finished the job and started the engine to check the compressor operation.  I got a shutdown after a few seconds.  The Pro-Link immediately diagnosed the problem as an active code 43 (low coolant level).  I added the lost coolant, started the engine and ran it with no shutdown.  The active code 43 had been addressed and moved to the historical codes.  I was able to clear it out right then with the Pro-Link. 

From the user guide:
If you are going to have an onboard computer with a series of inputs and outputs from a network of sensors scattered throughout the engine compartment, instrument panel and so on, why not have a way to tap into the computer?  When something goes wrong with the vehicle's operation, it may be from a faulty input , a faulty command, or a faulty reaction to a command.  Diagnosis involves finding which of these is the cause.  Efficient diagnosis involves the use of the Pro-Link 9000. You have instant access to any of the vehicle's operating data as long as the Pro-Link 9000 is connected.

Here are some documents for the Pro-Link 9000 in PDF format, MS Word format, DDEC II schematic in PDF format and the Allison ATEC MTB-746 fault codes in PDF format. The Allison 746 codes are downloaded using the under dash switch and light bulb just like the DDEC II but the engine has to be idling. The DDEC II schematic can be blown up to show ALL circuits and external connections.

The electronic MPG is another nice feature. It does instant MPG or short or long trip MPG with the operator entering the ODO to start the calculation.

I have the factory Pro-Link 9000 manual with illustrations but the PDFs number about 70 pages and are way too big to upload so I will try and get it down to reasonable size and then post it.

No Detroit dealer will turn up the HP on your 6V-92TA engine with only the possibility to do so if you have the engine serial number from a fire engine company (about 440 hp), a fire ladder truck (500 hp) or a boat engine (535+ hp) and even if they did, the Foretravel body does not have anywhere near the radiator capacity to handle the heat. The stock radiator will only marginally cool the stock HP in summer on long grades.

Yes you can get the manual for 40 on ebay But contact Jerry Maddox aka Coastprt first. He owns a printing shop also might have some available. Better to keep the money in the famiiy so to speak. ^.^d
