compartment door latch - where to buy

We have one problematic compartment door latch that I would like to replace.  It is on the curbside of the small rear compartment door that has our start battery bank inside.  This door only has a single latch that looks just like one of the pairs all  of our other compartment doors have.  These are left or right handed.  The one I need has a "R" for right hand mechanism.

Anyone know the manufacturer or part number?

Barry, could you retro this one into place. It is held in place with 4 screws too.

The latch is available from FOT only for $75.00 plus freight.  They have a limited supply and are no longer made.

I have figured out how to rebuild them for about $5.00-$10.00.  PM me for info if you want.

Barry,

I talked to and sent pictures of that same latch to Trimark and they never responded back to me.  I assumed it was because they didn't have anything similar to replace it with but I should probably give her another call.  Mine was locked up tight and I had to remove the entire assembly and zip tie the door shut.  Still need to get that fixed.

Barry/Robert,

Here is a link to how we are able to disassemble and repair these.  Scroll down a couple of post to see the pics.

Robert, I sent these photos to Trimark and an experienced person said "this is not a Trimark part".

Pamela & Mike, with the 'same as in an 80's Chevy Impala car door' knowledge, I Googled all around and could not see any latches that look similar to our latch.  Any more specific thoughts on what to look for?  Thanks for you spring repair info.

I would not doubt this latch which comes in Left and Right styles originally was designed for something far from RV compartment doors.  Like the origin of our factory installed headlights and taillights were from automobiles.

Not for sure, but try pinging Eberhard and see if they can ID it as one of their 241 series rotary latches (or if they have a equivalent)  Rotary Latch 240/241 Series | Eberhard Manufacturing Company

So if they are not Trimark, then they are most likely Southco.  Those are the two most popular manufactures.
I didn't see any exact matches visually on the Southco site but it sure looks like you can find the same functionality.  Wouldn't be surprised if these are obsolete.
If if were me I would look at the detailed dimensions and try to get the closest match and then do some customization: http://www.southco.com/static/Literature/r4-r.en.pdf
I went to Amazon and searched "Southco R4-10" and found many variations available with the full Southco P/Ns.  So you could reverse out the P/N to see the detail specs.
Customization would likely involve the mount, the pull rod length and moving the bolt too.  In could get "involve" quickly so one would need to be handy at such things.

Barry,

The last one I got came from Crow-Burlingame (it is now Bumper to Bumper) I took one in and he had a parts book (remember those) that had nothing but latches. They matched it up form the book that linked to a  Chevy.  I haven't been able to find the receipt with the part #  but will keep looking and post if I can find it.

Barry,

Found a receipt and the # is HTO-2.  I did a quick look on the net but didn't find anything yet.

Here's one that I rebuilt.  It now comes completely apart for servicing.

Also,  I sent Eberhard a couple of latch pix and they said they did not produce them.

I have contacted several manufacturers, and so far each has said "not my part", and each has recommended another manufacturer.  Will get back as I learn more.  Thanks for all the good ideas...

Our compartment door latch problem has been resolved.  I tried to source the latch, but after checking with 5 manufacturers, they all said "not ours" and often recommended a competitor manufacturer.  We contacted Polar, Eberhard, Trimark, Southco & Austin Hardware.

At this point, I was planning to use the experience of you guys to repair our worn latch.  But thinking the latch may someday be obsoleted, while still available from Foretravel, we decided to spring for a new Right latch and while we were going all the way, we also purchased a new Left latch.  We will keep the original latch for backup.

I also have another idea to try that increases the angle between the handle and latch to add more latch movement.  The start battery small door on these coach models is known for problematic latches due to small latch movement with full handle movement.

Thank you all for your recommendations, ideas & repair instructions.    Next stop Quartzsite. . .

Technically, it is obsolete. Mike Grimes informed me that when FT's stock is gone that is it. I bought 2 of each about 2 months ago and all of mine still work. I have been down that road with my 1981 International parts no longer available anywhere. Paid $250 .00 for a power steering pulley from a dealer that had the last one left in the U.S.A. Originally about a $35.00 dollar part.

Before I could install the new latch, I decided to take a stab at finding a way around the design problem.  Now with the full latch movement, the original problematic latch works just fine.  So now both the Left & Right new latches are in the spare parts box.

I started a new posting on how to correct the limited movement latch release on the 2 small rear doors:
