Generator starting problem

A couple of weeks ago I reported that I could not get the generator to stay on for more than about 15 seconds after many attempts to run it.  At the time I also had a problem with shore power getting past the surge protector which I reported on and was resolved.  Today, I added about a quart of coolant to the generator radiator before making another attempt.  This time it did the usual hesitation and sputter, but did not stall.  I was able to run it for several hours with a load.
The only things that occurred between this time and the last is that both battery banks were fully charged and the addition of the coolant.  Would either of these make the difference or is it, once again, magic?  The gen. trouble shooting guide did not list low coolant or battery charge as being a cause.

If you had an air pocket in the thermostat housing, it would show overheating very fast and shut down.
