fyi - DD 6V92 ipad app

From the website:  "RV Dash is an iPad application that connects via wifi to the DDEC ECM on an RV or Truck powered by a Detroit Diesel 8v92 or Series 60 engine"    RV Techtools

It works fine on a 6V92 as I just installed it on my old ipad.  The gauges are analog which I really like.  Kinda slick.  Its wireless so your display is not tethered to the dash area. Ray Davis the owner is quite helpful;

Also included is another app called "DDEC Decoder" that can wipe error codes. I have not fiddled with that yet. RV Techtools - DDec Error Decoder

While the app is free, the wireless hardware is $350 and includes the software and cables. Not sure how well this will support the 6V-92TA as it was designed for it's big brother, the 8V-92TA and it might be worth asking what the difference is. The price seems to have been reduced from the much higher original cost. Since it is bluetooth? so you can mount your iPad anywhere. Might be interesting at this price. Other interesting apps at this site. Email him for 6V-92TA support.

Could be an excuse to put the 8V-92TA engine in the U300. There IS room.

Ray, is it bluetooth?

I remember looking into this when Pierce mentioned it a few months back. The price then was IIRC $600? $350 makes it competitive with the VMSpc. It does seem to have several gauges/sensors that are not available on VMSpc. I see a couple of transmission temp readouts. They must have a way to tap into the transmission EMC. I didn't think ours had one.

It reads off of your ECM data port. Same as a prolink. You will not have some of the gage functions. If there is not a sensor you won't have a reading. For the same money you could just buy a prolink and be able to see injector response times, do cylinder cut out etc. The issue is that DDEC II just didn't provide the inputs or memory for the information.it wasn't designed too. DDEC III and IV did.I realize everyone wants that cool touchscreen bluetooth dash but I think you would be disappointed in what this was able to provide you. The system is not designed to provide it. Now if these were DDECIII or IV systems, we could be doing crazy cool stuff ,huge horsepower,  a selectable horsepower up to 3 programs in 1 ecm selectable with a prolink.  cool things! But DDECII does not have the memory capability.

Ray mentioned that any gauge missing could be added if there is a 'pid #' for it. These pid's without gauges would be displayed at the bottom of the screen.

Reply to Pierce - the unit speaks regular wifi not bluetooth vial this gizmo - http://www.cubiclabs.com/sensenet_can_and_wireless.htm.  Regarding the 8V92 swap - here is your howto:  http://www.busnut.com/artdg05.html  :)

Thanks Nick!

Good writeup on the engine swap and the fan drive. I had a PTO fan drive on my old Detroit bus. The only think missing is what the HP was on the new (to him) 8V-92TA. Wish our U300 had the engine access the '95 models have. The 746 Allison would handle the power but the rear end would need to be changed to get good fuel mileage. The four speed drives me crazy sometimes.

Interesting with the WiFi instead of bluetooth.

Stump, the DDEC II can be changed to III with some wiring looms and a new ECU. Nice to get fire dept or marine HP when you wanted it. And the touchscreen dash would be nice but like you said, it won't do what the Pro-Link will. But one is a display and the other a tool so what can you expect?

Kinda getting off subject here but...

I started looking around to benefits of upgrading the DDEC II. Found this video. This guy will put in a 3 way switch (also requires he install a DDEC IV) that can be thrown on the fly for economy, normal, and performance. Looks awesome but I could only use the performance mode on cool winter days. :)

The DDDC II Has a different pulse wheel at least on the series 60. The pulse readout on the DDECIII/IV IS DIFFERENT. I would assume it is slso5on the 92.On the series 60 You can convert a 2 to a 3 but the benefits vs the cost don't add up. I am not for certain ddec3 was ever offered on the 92. The benefits of the 3 allow some serious programming etc. BUT in these coaches you figure out how to cool it.

Here is a page with pin-outs/diagrams of the DDEC III and IV as used on the 50, 60 and the 92 series 2 cycles: Detroit Diesel DDEC III and IV ECM Vehicle and Engine Connectors | AxleAddict  It looks as if they use the same wiring loom but change the connectors at least on this site.

Here is yet another page for a shop that programs the DDEC III, IV and V as used in the electronic 6V-92 and 8V-92 so it looks like MTU has made provisions for upgrading the ECU to the latest models. I like the last sentence! www.dieselcontrolservice.com :: Series 50, 8V92, 6V92, MTU and other DDEC...

And yes, cooling would be the biggest challenge with the U300 having a much smaller radiator than my old 4107 bus. The temperature never moved off the thermostat.
