Electric Window Shade Repair

One of our electric window shades wasn't working.  The shade had failed in the extended or lowered position.  The symptom was the motor would run when actuated but the shade didn't retract.

In the photos below you'll see a small, olive green colored gear.  It slides on the silver metal shaft.  To the left of the gear are the string winding mechanisms that actually raise and lower the shade.  The cylinder to the right is the motor.

The olive green gear was no longer contacting the matching silver gear in the motor.  The fix was to re-engage the two gears by simply sliding the green gear back into the end of the motor.  After that I reinstalled the shade and it works.  In the clarity of hindsight, I think it would have been wise to add just a touch of RTV or other low strength adhesive to keep the gears from sliding apart again.  If the problem recurs I'll do that.

Don't make the newbie mistake I made of removing the trim from around the window when that wasn't necessary!  On ours there were two silver clips holding the shade in place.  Simply matter of pushing the clip aside and out popped the shade.
