Removing 1996 8.3 coolant filter

Hi all,
This is my first foretravel which ive had for 5 months. Would like to change the napa 4071 coolant filter. Po changed it over 2 years ago.
My rubber strap wrench slips on filter end. Do i need to remove turbo pipes to get a better bite with chain or pipe wrench? TY

Tom,

This is one of those fairly unique cases where you do NOT always go back with the same PN.

Coolant filters come in differing amounts of SCA (Supplemental Coolant Additive) from ZERO to 12 units.

If you have the old-generation "low silicate for diesels with added SCA" coolant, you have to TEST the coolant to determine the correct amount of SCA to add. The filtering function is the same in all of them.

If you have the newer generation OAT-based coolants, they use ONLY ZERO UNIT COOLANT FILTERS.

Follow the above advice and get a large set of channel lock pliers.

Brett, thank you for quick reply. Yes,after 4 po, it still has conventional green coolant. I ordered amazon fleetguard test strips 2602A july 22. Only to find expiration of Aug 2017 for four , 3way strips. After 15k miles on coolant filter, thought it needed change.
John44. Thanks for large channel lock tip.
Dont know if theres room, without removing overhead turbo pipes?

Tom,

Yes, be sure to test the coolant-- the three way strips test for SCA concentration, pH and freeze point.

Only with the results of the SCA part, can you determine the correct filter.

And, water pump pliers, oil filter wrench, etc can be used.

Not sure of the correct diameter size, but this is the type of filter wrench we use in three different sizes:
4-1/8 to 4-1/2 Inch Diameter, Oil Filter 98190549 - MSC I don't like any removal tool that can puncture or crush filter because if it still does not come off after being damaged, vehicle is down.

]]Thanks Barry. I removed the above air filter turbo hose, then used huge #460 channel locks. Your proto tool was way cheaper. Lol
