Check Fuel Filter Understanding of Ultra-Newbie

See if I get this correct for 2000 U270 ISC 350.

Primary Filter is the one above the start batteries.  Original owner's manual calls for Racor R90P:

    • Presume 30 micron is best as owner's manual is silent on micron spec?
    • I assume the fuel filter head will accommodate any cross reference to R90P?
    • This is a "spin-on" filter but what i'm confused about is the clear bowl kit.  Does the R90P work with or without a bowl kit?
    • I'd prefer a filter with the clear bowl.  The bowl kit apparently comes in heated and non-heated models.  Does this bowl kit screw on to bottom of filter?  What's on the coach now can be seen in the attached picture.    Amazon sells the R90P for $32.70 but the RK 21113-13-11 non-heated bowl is $109.97 and I see them on eBay for $69.95!  Is there a filter/bowl assembly of equal function that's less expensive?  Looks like NAPA 600002 filter for $20 and 600136 bowl for $32.99.  Wix filter WF10012 for $52.99 and bowl  WF10136 for $32.99.  Are these direct replacements of equal quality?

    Thanks in advance for checking my understanding and pointing me to reliable & inexpensive outlets.  I'm OK buying online and buying a few for surplus.

    How many of each do you usually carry with you?

     Primary has primer bulb?  How much?

    Cummins Operation and Maintenance manual says ISC is self-priming.  NO need to prefill new filter with fuel....but it is recommended?  What say all of you?

    There are filters that will cross to the R90P, but don't include the bowl. I had a Baldwin on for awhile that was like that. If they don't have attachment threads on the bottom for the bowl, they should have a drain valve on the bottom. These work okay. I am now using the clear bowI and have had a Napa Gold (last time I checked at Napa, they wanted $50 for them!), a Donaldson P551856 ($30.59), and a Fleetguard FS19532 (I think it was about $35). The bowl may have cracked, but maybe the previous owner found it inconvenient. I am now using the Fleetguard. I don't have the heating element in mine, and I don't think I need it considering where we plan to use the coach. You can find replacement bowls for the Racor on ebay quite cheap, but maybe because of being made in China. You can probably find a whole new old stock R90P housing with a filter and a clear bowl included for much less than $100. For the secondary (which I had a Cummins parts guy tell me it was the primary), I have only used the FWS1022 and I last paid about $26 at Freightliner (which carries Fleetguard filters).

       Thanks Don. I have to assume (🤑) the housing shown in the pictures will accept the Racor or alternate spin on filter assemblies with clear bowl.  Interesting that both the Racor and Fleetguard filter spec in the original 2000 owners manual are still easy to find today.

      Clear bowl screws on the bottom of the primary. Have an extra in case one breaks during R&R and the big O ring also. Check micron specs for your year and engine. Older coaches may take a 10 micron secondary while newer ones take a 2 micron secondary. Threads may be the same so check before buying. If you have a had pump, it's the best way to fill the filters. Just leave them slightly loose, pump until diesel and bubbles come out at the mating surface and then tighten. If your hand primer is on the engine, it may be after the primary so this may not work so check the path of the incoming fuel.
