Dale,

When we had our '92 U-240 to get to the backside of the generator you had to get a floor jack under the outside edge of the generator mounting frame. There were 2 bolts on the outside ends of the generator mounting frame that had to be removed.  After these are out you could let the generator swing down by letting the floor jack down. The rear of the generator mounting bracket was actually a long hinge.  You had to work stooped/bent over the top to get to the starter. Yours could be totally different though. Sorry that I don't have any pics. as that coach was long gone before the forum we have today.

One other thought is to put your tech  questions over in "Tech Talk" as "Instruction Manual" is for how the forum works or you have problems with the site its self.

At least on our 1993 U240, you had to undo a bolt at front of slide and back of slide and the generator DID slide out.

What is voltage reading from the lug where the large-gauge red wire attaches to the generator to generator metal (ground)?

From that lug to clean metal on chassis?

I just looked inside our gen compartment, and, as Brett says, there are just two bolts holding. I've never had to do it, but it sure looks easy peasey to me, unless a PO has done some bonehead wiring changes!

Thank you for responses..mike,there is fiberglass belly under this generator,so..also,I have a hard time navigating site..seems like it used to be easier to post questions...brett, voltage is 12.6 @ solenoid..my mechanical neighbor checked out and thinks solenoid  is working properly...2 bolts @ front of generator might be holding it down, but there is no way that I can see to access rear...

Dale,

The bolts securing the generator slides are both OUTBOARD-- at the front and back of the generator bay.  They hold the rails that hold the generator to the rails that mount to the chassis.

And, yes, some previous owners of this style generator and generator mounting (me for sure) DID do some rewiring:  The ground circuit for the 12 VDC including starter is through the ball bearings of the slide tray.  NOT a good ground.  Easy to run a new ground from generator clean metal to any piece of chassis clean metal.

Have you tried reaching up from underneath with a long screwdriver into the fan and tried rotating the engine? Nothing to loose, and would tell you if the engine is frozen.

BTW, there is a good Onan generator service/parts place in Dickinson.  Don't know if they got hurt in Harvey.

I am able to turn generator over with socket at right side,so I know it's not froze..starter seems kaput...

Have you checked the starter solenoid in the control box of the generator,to see if when it clicks there is power on the terminal that goes to the starter?
