Winegard Question

We are getting ready for our big road trip. The PO installed a Winegard SK3005 RV sk swm 3 in 2013 at great expense. We have a Direct TV Genie in our home that we would like to install it into our coach, a 2001 U320. My wife, proactively, bought a SWM 840 kit, which came with NO INSTRUCTIONS !!??


We are out of our comfort zone. What is the best course of action?? The PO had Direct TV, and it worked fine, but he wasn't real helpful.

Anyone out there know how we should proceed???? Again.....thanks

We also installed the Winegard SK-3005, and a few years later wanted to use DirecTV Genie HR44 receiver.  We then added a SWM-8 and connected our Genie, so maybe we can help you.  We did the antenna install, cable runs & Genie install ourselves...

I see the SWM 840 kit contains a SWM 8 switch, power inserter & splitter.  You must have some good information as you have all you need for your Genie.

I will tell you what we did, and you can modify it to fit your needs.

We ran four RG-6 coax cables from roof antenna to front overhead where our Genie is located.  SWM8 is also in this inside area. 

Four coax cables connect to SWM8 and one cable from SWM8 goes to Genie.

When you get your Genie working, you can graduate to the next level and use wireless client to have the bedroom TV have its own tiny receiver that can watch, record & delete different channels than what is going on up front.

We have the Directv client in the bedroom, but seldom use it as almost all of our TV watching happens up front on our 46" TV.

Directv SWM LNB's, only have one output. The old LNB's had 4. All you need to do is use the one coax from the dish, to the  power insert er which is already there I am sure.Then hookup the Genie. It's plug and play
If you have the old style LNB, you will need to run 4 cables, and use the SWM 8

100% of our TV watching is from Directv DVR recordings.  Just more enjoyable and efficient. 

We also have a 3 gb hard drive in our Genie so it can hold more recordings.  We simply unplug the Genie HR44 power, Ethernet, HDMI & RG-8 Coax cables from our home and relocate the Genie into our motorhome, plugging in the cables and we are good to hit the road with all the recorded shows already on the DVR.

We did buy a 2nd Genie power supply so we don't have to carry it back and forth.  The same with the Genie remote controls as each location has their own remotes.  But carrying power supply and remotes with Genie is also ok.

We use Ethernet, but Wifi can also be used, and of course, Internet is not needed at home or on the road for Genie to do its magic.

We have been using flat flexible HDMI cables for ease of connecting, but having pre run HDMI on your TV will make it less to hook up.

I mounted our SWM8 on the roof beside the dish.  It generates a lot of heat that I wanted to keep out of the overhead cabinet.  Barry uses a fan to solve the problem with his approach.  Download the wiring instructions from the Winegard site.  There are two different wiring options that you can use, depending on what channels you want.  I've been known to climb up the the roof to move connections-Barry doesn't need to do that.

If you look at the big picture, this is a SWM. All the newer HD dish's have it. You will see only One output. Pictured is the splitter/power inserter needed. If you have a single output LNB, then it needs the splitter/power supply.
BTW ......SWM stands for single wire multi switch, which is built into the single output LNBS

from there, all you have to do, is plug your receiver into one port of the spliter. Plug and play.
