Converters/pwr supplies/chargers

Are the ones in our coaches switched mode or ferroresonate? I don't think they destroy themselves when their output leads are shorted together temporarily or maybe long time??

Jim,

Post exactly what unit you have and exactly what "abnormal" conditions it experienced.

The alternative is to contact the company that made it and ask.

Most have upgraded from their OE "stupid" converter to a smart charger or smart inverter/charger.  That is  additionally why so few answers.

Jim,

Document below may be of interest to you.  To me (a English major) it is clear as mud.  I'm going out on a limb and guess the converter/chargers originally fitted to early model Foretravel coaches used ferroresonant technology, because it was cheaper and simpler, accepts a wide range of input voltage, and provides good short circuit protection.

Power Supply Basics - Part 2: Ferroresonant and Switch Mode - MCI Transformer...

"Another unique feature of the ferroresonant transformer is its ability to provide current limiting in the event of a short-circuit. This effect is called foldback. The Ferro systems are good surge suppressors, and provide an inherent short-circuit protection and are not sensible to input overloads (like in case of lightning strikes) which are effecting the input voltage."

Thanks, Chuck. I have read that when the xfmr core is saturated, no more energy can transfer primary to secondary. Must be why they don't destroy themselves? I'm guessing the supplies can be both smps AND ferro resonant? Smps allows for much smaller xfmrs & other components...

Jim sounds like you have replaced your old inverter charge . I did the Wizard smart charge, I burned up my inverter , not knowing what I was doing.  Who makes a nice Inverter. Only need one to power up my Dish receiver, When using my Honda, EU 2000 when i set it in the economy mode.  thanks
