Heat Pump Cold Weather Operation

We have a 2002 U295 with heat pumps, no Aquahot. I have extrapolated, through other discussions on this forum, that I need to run the #2 furnace when it gets below freezing to keep heat blowing into the basement and prevent any water freezing issues. I want to run my #2 furnace and my #1 heat pump, but when I select the #1 HEAT PUMP it turns on the #1 furnace instead of the #1 heat pump. It doesn't do it all the time, but it seems that the colder the outside temperature the more it insists on running the #1 furnace instead of the #1 heat pump. Sometimes it will say AUX HEAT under HEAT PUMP, but not always.

Anyone have experience with this?
I would love to know what's going on and if there is a way that I can force it to run the heat pump.

Heat pumps don't work in extreme cold temps. Someone with the exact temperature that they stop heating will probably reply.

Don't know if it applies to furnace/heatpump operation as well, but on my 99 with aqua-hot, could not run one zone heat pump and the other aquahot, both had to be the same mode. Do not even know if this is sop either.

My heat pumps don't do much after about 40 or so.

The older comfort controls would not let you run heat pump on one zone and furnace on the other zone. They had to be in the same mode on both zones. Not sure about the newest comfort controls.
