Strange happening yesterday...

The coach is just outside my window where I spend most of my day. Thought I heard the shop compressor start and run. Finally realized it was the fan on the front heater of the coach. Checked and found the on off switch on the termostat in the off position and the temp selector all the way on cold. The propane detector was blinkin' and peepin'. Fan eventually shut itself off.

We had a lot of rain during the day and this was right after dark. Think that's what happened? No indication of water around thermostat...

Jim,

Assume you are talking about the furnace, not dash HVAC/heater fan?

If furnace, check that the PC board (outside access door) is dry and connections are good. 

Also, check house battery bank voltage.  Lot of strange thing happen with low voltage.

Thanks, Brett. Yes it was the front furnace. I just went back inside to make sure I turned the propane sniffer off. That should not have had anything to do with the symptom?

Propane sniffer could have been triggered by low voltage, presence of propane OR just old age (expired).  That would turn off propane at the tank (solenoid valve), so no way for the furnace to fire and run.  That would not stop the fan from coming on.

I have no idea what my sniffersounds are when in alarm condition. As I recall, it has a steady beeping sound and a flashing green lite when I slide the switch to "on". The sniffer works 'cause no propane inside unless it's on.

It's a waste of good stuff, but a little whiskey spilled in the area will tell you the sound. It gets one's attention!

Must it be spilled - or  could I just sit some(in a glass,to insure it doesn't spill!?

There is a rule-- if you spill it, you must lick it up.  SO, be sure to clean the floor FIRST.

You might want to check the date of manufacture on them.

I checked mine on my 97 and they would sound the alarm when I pushed the button but when I put my butane lighter in the hole of the LP sniffer (unlit of course) I held it for 3 minutes and it did not set it off.  The one in my trailer which is 4 years of went off in 12 seconds.

I blew smoke into my smoke detector for 2 minutes and it would not go off.

This detectors are only good for about 5 to 7 years.

We test our smoke detector every time we make toast. :D

When I pulled mine out and looked at the date it was 1997 so they were OEM items  :o
