Parking brake

We talked about mine a few months ago and I still have one question I'm not sure about.

With  the instructions in my manual advising me to shift to neutral with pressure on the service pedal, Then switch the lever on the dash to "set", does that tell me my park brake operates along with the service brakes?? Am I wearing out park brake shoes each time I operate service brakes?

Are we talking about an air brake system? if so then it's a push/pull knob on the dash?
If all that's right then the parking brake is activating the service brakes as designed, a trans brake on the drive line is normal on a stick shift to slow the gear box when selecting a low gear to pull away, these drive line set ups get burned out when a poor driver depresses the clutch fully and just brakes to a stop rather than using the gear box to slow down.

You are mixing up a clutch brake which is used to stop the trans. input shaft from turning to put the trans in gear with a driveline brake behind the transmission which is used for parking and both should never be engaged while moving. Depressing the clutch all the way engages the clutch brake

Your U280 does not have any parking brake shoes. There is a big spring in each one of the rear brake canisters. They operate the rear discs without any help from air pressure. When you release the parking brake, you are putting air pressure BACK into the canister and compressing the spring. The parking brake is only to be used on flat or a slight incline. It is not an emergency brake so if the brakes are overheated and have faded, it won't do any good at all. Professionals block their tires when parked.

If you lose air pressure either overnight or because of a air system failure, the parking brake will automatically set itself.

Never try and take the canister apart without a good knowledge of how to do it. It can cause serious injury or worse.

If you don't really know your stuff it is not a very good idea to be touching those brakes. If there is one thing you always want to be able to do it's stop.  The brake pots (cans,actuators,etc) are approx 30 square inches and that spring inside is supposed to equal 60 psi at that size in applied pressure to the slack adjuster. Many mechanics in a rush have cut the wrong clamp off (and they knew better) to their detriment. ( some deaths, serious injuries, some lost limbs).

Actually I was trying to clarify what kind of brake system and park brake Jim was talking about, I'm still corn fused as I don't know what "Juice Brakes" are I thought a coach with an 8.3 Cummins would have air brakes. ??  :whistle:

Juice brakes means hydraulic brakes or brake fluid is used. Not knowing all the chassis' I wouldn't know which system is in each one. There was an air over hydraulic system in some early trucks, don.t know if coaches used them.
