For when the Hadley's just don't cut it

My latest project has been to install a set of Train Horns on my 91 Unihome. I found a set on sale at the truck supply for about $135.00
I mounted them under the right front.  I also had a cheapo OOOGAH Horn I had gotten at Harbor Freight a couple years ago and had sitting on shop shelf. So I put that on also. The OOGAH horn was not really worth the effort. It doesn't sound much like a OOGA should. I had a blank switch hole in my dash for a ether switch. I bought a new On Off On switch like is used on the fans and can switch down for the Hadleys or up for the train. They sound great,I cannot wait until we go through a tunnel!!! :D
The Grand Villa switch is made by Valeo the switch is a 511 series. These are available from

Great Customer service.
The 511 switch has a hole in it for a lens or a blank I got a black blank and was putting it in and it flipped out and went down my a/c  floor vent in the kitchen I have not got it out of the vent yet! smh
These lenses are available in different colors if you want.

COOL!  What does the switch switch?  Do you have a separate solenoid air valve for the train horn?

Are these the ones you got?

The switch was about 11.00. the horns have a solenoid on them. I tapped into the air line going to the step with a DOT quick connect Tee. The horns have a 1/4 compression fitting on them. They sound GREAT!! ;D  I might try connecting them all together tomorrow just to see ;) !!

In a prior life I built ambulances.  A left over artifact from those days is a multifunction siren module with 8 different siren choices, a microphone for the voice choice and a connection to the horn button that adds a roar no one will ignore.  The 200 watt speaker weighs about 30 lbs.  So that and some emergency lights and I would be an EMT FT at least until they caught me.

The train horns are way cool.  Nice add on.

The switch lets me choose either the Hadley's or the Train. All I did was take the wire from the Hadley solenoid and run it to the new switch. This is the power. the switch has a wire from it going to each set of horns. You switch the switch and choose either Hadleys or Train  then press horn button on steering wheel. Your steering wheel horn button is what makes them blow.

In my arsenal I have 2 sets of train horns and multiple Whelen siren set-ups. Had the twin speakers mounted in my '81 and the controls are still in it. Same set up Roger mentioned just no flashing lights.

That was Funny as Heck!! These and Cranemans are the real thing. Mine are a few steps down . I didn't want to spend $800.00 or so dollars on a set of horns!
Craneman being you have those hang them under your coach or mount them on the roof!! ^.^d

I started to mount the black Nathan's on my '81, mounted an air tank and bought the 1/2" pipe inlet outlet solenoid then decided to put on the Whelen  295hf police siren instead. I only used it at NASCAR or on the 4th. of July and New years. It would stop the rowdy's cold at NASCAR. Both horn sets are Nathan's they just have the trumpets located differently on the manifold.

I have a group of 3 train horns plumed togeother a truck stop owner gave me. I'm going to try and fit them in the front compartment in front of the ac condenser.  I like what you have to stump. The last time I blew the Hadley's the horn button stuck and I beat it until it came unstuck and my air was down to 65 lbs on a 2 lane with no shoulders.

All this talk about horns jogged my memory.  When we cleaned out my parents house after they passed, I found a set of old air horns in my Pop's stash.  In the box was a belt driven air compressor, air tank about the size of a large loaf of bread, and the horns.  So, I went out to our garage and rummaged around until I found the box.

The horns say "Sparton For Safety" on the caps.  They are all metal, with chrome plated trumpets (10" and 12.5") and a silver painted cast body.  The chrome is pitted, but otherwise they look pretty good.  I tested them by hooking them up to my air compressor with 125 psi in the tank....

Scared the POOP out of myself!  They are LOUD!  I don't think they are louder than the Hadleys, but kinda hard to tell cuz I was afraid to really let them blow full blast.  Didn't want the neighbors P.O'ed at me.  They are a little higher pitched than the Hadleys, but have a really nice sound.

I'll put these on my list of "things to do that will probably get me into trouble with the DW"  They would fit great behind the front grill on the GV!  8)

Decided to see what all I had on that pallet rack shelf. Had 5 complete siren-horn setups with speakers and a few more air horns and a train whistle. Even a new Hadley set-up with compressor and tank. Roger would recognize some of these from his ambulance experience.

The Federal stuff looks familiar.  When going to college I worked in a 2-way radio shop and we serviced the police cars for 2 cities.
