New to Foretravel have some questions

We just bought a 1999 U320 and I have a few questions I hope to get answered
1. Is the Aqua Hot fuel filter behind the little door in front of driver side front tire?
2. where is the relay that turns on the hall (bathroom)  ceiling  light it was working then stopped? (bulb is good)
3. where can I get the little plastic clips that hold the fluorescent lights up?
4. the fuel water separator filter is in place but the duel fuel filter above the coach batteries has been by passed would there be any reason for doing that?
I appreciate the help

Chris,

1.  On some coaches Yes
2.  If you are talking about the light between the bedroom and bathroom that relay is normally hid behind the bedroom TV.
3.  We replace ours with LEDs and don't know off the top of my head
4.  Most likely it was leaking air in thus they by passed it to keep from getting air locked.  This needs to be fixed as fuel filters are on the top of the list of things that will leave you setting on the side of the road. Which filter do  you have?  If the old Winn system several have replaced them with a new style Racor or a Davco 382.

yes

Te same type hardware is available at Home Depot, Lower, etc. Both pieces are metal, there is not a plastic base and a metal clip. But I have replace the base on half of mine with the home depot metal base, the OEM clip works fine, no need to replace both

$1.29 ea . Usually in the aisle with the cabinet door knobs/hardware, sometimes a bit of a "treasure hunt"

Our 1993 does not have a relay, just directly switched. Check your schematic to see if you have one. As recommended above, replace all florescent lights with LEDs. The low current draw and long life mean much longer battery use while dry camping. If you don't have the electrical schematic for your coach, search the library here at the forum, download and then take it to your local print shop to have blown up to 2'x3' or what they have available. Roll it and store it onboard in a mailing tube. Makes troubleshooting much easier.

Diesels normally have two fuel filters. A "primary" filter designed to remove the contaminants larger than approx 30 microns and a "secondary" filter designed to remove smaller particles from 10 microns on older engines to 2 microns on the newer diesels. I did a lot of work on Mercedes automotive diesels and with all the contamination in the fuel available here and resulting plugging of the stock filter, I installed Racor filters with a plastic bowl and water sensor plus a filter that removed everything down to 1 micron. A micron is one millionth of a meter, a meter being 39.37 inches.

Glenn,

Some easy and not so easy questions. I used to be a grey market Mercedes diesel importer starting in the early 1970's. At the time there was so much trouble with the domestic fuel that I became a Racor dealer and put Racor 200s on all the diesels. They fit nicely and only took about 15 minutes to install. Easy to look in the plastic see through case and drain any water that accumulated. Their capacity was many times greater than the stock filter and stopped anything larger than one micron.

Fast forward to the time we purchased our U300. It came with a much larger Racor primary filter chassis mounted next to the hand fuel pump. Knowing what algae, water and other contaniments can do to your day, I ordered up a few filters plus an extra screw on clear plastic base with drain. Photos below show the Racor filter element along with the Detroit secondary filter. The other photo shows the extra base I carry along.

Here is the ebay website showing many different Racor filters. Some have a set of probes to trigger an alarm for the presence of water in the filter. I've always used Racors but there are a lot of other good filters on the market. Good to seek some advice as some filters are prone to leaking air into the fuel system. The filters on the Ford/Navistar 6.9 and 7.3 are a prime example. Air in the system makes for hard starting and starter motor wear.

Good to follow your engine manufacturer's specs for the recommended micron and flow rating for both the primary and secondary filters. Later engines will require lower micron ratings.

Since our diesel engines only burn a tiny fraction of the fuel pumped from the tank, the rest being returned to the fuel tank after cooling the ECM (in some cases) and injection pump/injectors, the filter has to be sized for the gallons per hour flow required. Check before buying.

OUCH!
Check the leveling system....When we first got our coach went to HWH for 6 packs and a slide seal.. HWH mis wired the 6 packs and put the coach in a twist.. taking out both windshields..
Also check the bulkhead bolts if your coach has them..some may be sheared/missing which would allow the coach to "flex" as well..
