Engine ECM Gone Bad!

Just had the ECM on our coach tested at Cummins and was found to be defective.  Does anyone have any thoughts on why they go bad and if they can be "rebuilt"?  Would appreciate any comments and/or guidance.  JOE

Jim beat me to the post button but ECM  King is well know around here. Frank or Jeff (one is the owner the other is the head tech. don't remember which is which) are well versed in repair and can fix you up.

Check to see if you have a fuel cooler. ECU is cooled by recirculated diesel fuel which can get very hot. What year is your coach?

I would get prices on a new and a rebuilt/used one and see what the difference is,the new one probably has a longer warrentee.

I had a bad ECM a couple of years ago and was causing a major problem with the throttle. had another put in at Cummins but problem continued and it turned out to bad pins at the connection. they should be able to check that and if that is not it then my new one was $1400 but I had them remove it and put old one back when the real problem was found.

There are some shops that have "test" ecm's or known good ones to try because of misdiagnosed harness issues.

I think it was the cat ecm's that when they failed it was due to fuel contaminating the inside of the ecm's.
