Update on progress of our deer smack from late Sept

We were able to see our beloved girl. FOT did a great job on her front end. But we still needed to have the engine light addressed.  We were able to get her over to Bernd's shop in NAC. He called a couple of days later and spoke with my DH and said it appeared that there was a problem with the heads. Since we have an extended service plan, I called them and they said to have Bernd call and tell them exactly what was wrong.  Relayed the message to Bernd and we continue to wait.  But from everything I can find out on Bernd's shop,we appear to be in excellent hands to handle this problem.

Chuck,
I have no clue about what creates the power to push the coach.  I heard my husband say heads, there for I repeated it, if it is singular, then I will amend it to head.
I have no clue what a head on an engine does or even where you find it. All I know is that what ever it is Bernd said that we got it to him early, that the last one he did was 30k , but ours shouldn't be that much.
So exactly what does this head do?

It houses the valve system and the injectors. I would be curious as to how a head goes bad without overheating or losing water. There must be more to the story.

There were several ISX engines in the '09/'10 time frame that had head trouble.  One member here was Jim Busby's 2009 that had head trouble.  There are other builders that had problems with the same lot of engines that had valve problems. Here is a link to his trouble CUMMINS ISX ENGINE 600  This kind of failure is where the $30k figure came from.  There are several other threads that talk about this trouble.

I don't know if any of the '12 Nimbus even had a 600 hp ISX.

We aren't 600 hp. I think we are 500 hp. Isn't that an ISM?

Lynn & Linda,

Has there been any progress made on your engine trouble?  What did they find was the trouble? I have been wondering if you are back going.

Just returned from Nac and talking with Bernd. From his explanation, there is a sleeve, that slipped on our #6 cylinder. This in turn started each of the others to start to slip in various degrees. The slip allowed fluids to intermix and the fluid causes pressure increases.  The engine was on it's last legs when the coach was transferred to Bernd's shop. He said it was all it could do to get up the hill and he heard it coming. I was shown the pistons and you can see visible scratching and burn marks.  The fan is the worse for wear as it did it's best to try and keep things cool. It's bearings are sounding like castanets. The fan has to be sent to England and has a 60 day minimum turn around time.  All I know is about 18 coach bucks for parts was left yesterday. My extended service plan will cover it after the the work is done. We are hoping to get the coach home by late June. If not, I have some July reservations that I will have to cancel. It was hard enough just having to cancel out of the mid south rally and the motorcade that was starting up the Chism trail in April.
That is All I know. P.s. we are a 450 hp engine per Bernd.

Agree, practically no external difference between 450 and 500 hp engines. Check Engine ID plate on right side of engine block.

Will do, next time I see the engine. Guess I could call foretravel and ask. Just hanging in there and waiting for Bernd to do his magic. After meeting with him, he knows his stuff and after his initial shock of ,no DH with me(home sick), explained what had occurred in great detail so I would be able to relay to my husband what had occurred. I really appreciate and like the fact that Bernd takes the time to talk with his customers.
