Used parts

I'm thinking about buying a used 2002 foretravel. I am concerned that it might be very difficult to find use parts and if you can find them they're very costly what do you guys know?

How old.  For mine, virtually all parts are available.  Cummins and Allison for the drive train.  HWH for the slide.  The factory has many, many coach parts and most are also available from other sources.  I have had no problems in 6 years.

Ours is an 02 and we have never had trouble getting parts except for the controller for the air/electric awning.  It has since been repaired and works great (so far.)

Well I can still find parts for my old rig. Have to do a little digging some times but so far found what I need. You can always come here to this forum. Trust me, someone on here will know what path to take and where to find that elusive part.. Like others on here have said, if you are unfamiliar with big rig RV's and maybe not their systems, get an expert to check out your prospect. A little money up front can save you a ton down the road.

I'll be the contrarian in this discussion.

You may be OK at this moment -- even finding new parts.

However, if I were buying again and looking for something to keep a while, I would find someone really knowledgeable and do some research on certain components.

With my 1997 (along with another owner I'm aware of) I've had to disable the ABS because Haldex obsoleted the front relay valve with no replacement.  After posting here, beating the bushes, and calling every source I could find I had to replace that valve with an old style non-ABS version and disable ABS completely.

When my transmission hiccuped, Allison suggested that I might need to replace the shift keypad which in this model also required a change to the controller.  The controller is no longer available but I "ought to" be able to find a rebuilt one.

This is not to suggest not buying but if you're looking for something to keep for a while think about stockpiling some critical spares that might be needed when you can't find them.  To do that you will need someone to advise that is more than a "swap part numbers" kind of mechanic.

Stick with the 02 or newer as it sounds like anything older might have issues with parts

I don't think there is anything magic about 2002.  Motorhomes are not like cars where lots of OEM parts go NLA at 10 years.  Our truck-based parts are supported for many decades.  Everything else can be replaced with newer components.

Mike,
There are some parts that will eventually fail like the gray/blue box under the dash that controls the electronic dash gauges.  When it if fails, it seems like one gauge or two at a time, it is not repairable or replacable.  Whenit fails you just have to figure out a work around like many of us have.  Many time the work around solution turns out to be better.

But like most have said there is a replacement part out there for just about everything else, sometimes it takes some hunting.

Hope you found a good coach for you.
