Found spindle problem when correcting a leaking left-front seal:

Found spindle problem when correcting a leaking left-front seal:

Using a new Stemco 383-0136 $41.10 Voyager seal, found the spindle surface would not accept the new seal.

Upon closer examination, found that this surface had a factory-installed wear sleeve making the diameter too large for the new seal.

Cutting off the wear sleeve allowed the wheel seal to fit.

Since the 383-0136 was damaged trying to fit it on with the wear sleeve, we tried a different Stemco 383-0236 $43.57 Discover seal which installed ok without the wear sleeve.

The new seal locks onto the spindle and seals and spins within itself. The wear sleeve is for the lip seal. I use the one you are putting on when ever I change out the old style.

What was the number on the seal you took off?
The stemco you used is a good seal.

At first, without realizing that the wear seal was in place, we tried to 'push' the new style seal, but it would not go on for 'some' reason.  We figured we had the wrong cross referenced seal.

Then with a 'second' look it appeared there was another steel band pressed on.  Don't know why a wear seal was originally installed, before any wear.

With a chisel  the edge of the band was split and removed.

John, all that bare metal on the spindle housing was very oily and dirty.

These guys at the shop used something I have not seen, to clean lots of things under the coach:

A 2-gal bucket filled with brake cleaner that get sucked out with a hose attached to a high-pressure air hose nozzle. The air / brake cleaner mixture blows against oily surfaces and atomizes / evaporates leaving everything clean and dry. It worked like a charm.

Used on the front and rear axle bearing supports (after removing bearings & seals), bottom of transmission, retarder air valve, etc.

They used a siphon gun AKA a John Wayne gun,Binks makes a good one.Have used them to paint machinery and clean things.
Varsol is good to use as the fumes are not as bad as brake cleaner, the Binks has an adjustable nozzle and can also be used as an blower.
