About to install a Davco 382 Fuel-Water Separator

As the title says I'm about to install a Davco 382 on my DD 6v-92. I have a couple of questions for any of you who have switched to the Davco.

I plan to replace the primary and leave the secondary in place. I want to mount the Davco in the same location as the primary. I'm not sure what to do about the primer pump that is on the primary. Do I even need the primer pump with the Davco. It looks like after I have the Davco in I can just fill it up with diesel via the top of the filter housing. Or have the DW crank it while I have the cap loose in the filter housing so air can escape out the top. Since I'm leaving my secondary filter in should I keep the primer pump for when I change it? If so do I just plumb it parallel to the Davco? I will install a ball valve at the Davco input to keep fuel from siphoning itself back into the tank when changing filters but there is not one there now so I'm sure I'll have a bunch of air in the line when I get everything together.

In the pics I show the existing primary filter. The second pic is not my 382 it's a pic I picked up off the net.

Any advise appreciated.

I like the concept of the 382 after seeing one on a trucker youtube vid. might use it for my primary fuel filter. For my secondary I have the racor 790r with a built in priming pump. I like that, as its easy to loose prime when you change filters (or  hose) and the lift pump didn't have enough oooomph to pull fuel from the tank.
Not sure about your install, so someone with it will chime in.

You can buy block off adaptors from Davco for where your existing filters are now. Then extend fuel lines to new filter housing.

I've got the Davco, happy with  it.  It sounds like Stump's idea might retain the primer pump with no valving or check valves. If so, that's the way I would go, absolutely would retain the primer pump.

  Do you have a primer on the secondary as well?  Are you locating the Davco above the top of fuel tank per instructions?

I'm not sure what I'd be blocking off? The Davco only has 2 ports. 1 in 1 out. (oh and a drain). I'm sure I can buy adaptors for those locally.

What I'm looking for is if I need the primer and if I do how do I plumb it. After thinking about it a bit I think I could tee into the line before going into the Davco and add a check valve. Then tee back into the line on the output side.

I was hoping someone with a 6v92 would have already done this and save me some engineering. Also hoping the primer wasn't needed but since it's already there probably should just use it.

Ken I put a davao on my cummins but had to extend hoses and move filter to other side of frame--as you are aware the daveco is quite a bit larger than racor at least mine was.  As far as valve, if you take the large fitting out if the intake side of filter there should be a check valve in there to prevent fuel from siphoning back into tank. I happen to get mine off e bay and it had a navistar fitting (international) so I had to machine a new fitting to work with GIC fittings.

With a blockoff plate you would retain all the connections to the existing filter housing.  The old filter would be removed and the blockoff plate installed in place of the old filter, on the old filter housing.  The blockoff has tapped fittings which you would use your new hoses to attach there, and at the Davco.  That way you would retain your prime pump. Which would work very well for fiter changes on the davco, no need to pour fuel into it after a filter change. 

That said, no experience with your engine or filter assembly, might want to verify that the pump would still work. Google blockoff plate for plenty of examples.

If you eliminate the purge pump how would you reprime your engine?

Here is pics of old mount and new mount
Old mount would have put filter on top of batteries
I drilled and tapped frame on drivers side made bracket to surround filter in case tire flipped something up and hit filter
