Exhaust Wrap

I am redoing my exhaust system and have a 5'' 45 degree pipe coming off the turbo going into a 5'' 90 degree elbow and turning down. It is real close to the Bed framework in the bend that turns down. I am going to need heatproof this pipe and or area somehow. How much heat transfer have you seen with the wraps you guys have used.

You probably saw the photos of the insulation after I put a match to it. It's super flammable so the first think I did was remove all if it, replace with a layer of compressed R-19 and then cover with Backerboard. Your wrap will lower the temps and take a thermal load off the DDEC ECU. I don't see how it survives in the heat. Probably the diesel flowing through it cools it enough. The combination of insulation and Backerboard will lower the bed temperature in summer. Wrap should give a little more boost. Many had the wrap OEM. Ours didn't.

One member already lost his U300 when a clamp came off the turbo thanks to shoddy shop work that had been recently done.

Most of the wraps are very inexpensive on eBay. The Detroit takes the large wrap.

Stump,

Rather than a wrap type material for that close of clearance look for some 1" thick Kao-Wool.  This is high heat blanket material we used in the power plant business. If you have someone that works in any type of heat generating business they will have access to some scraps that you may be able to mooch for free.

If the wood is vertical a refective metal plate with an airspace behind it will keep the wood cooler.

Yes, two inches plus after I installed the board and insulation. Here is a photo of what the stuff looks like when on fire.

Here is what Hardie Backerboard looks like in a comparison to wood and vinyl siding.

A real life fire on Backerboard house siding. The board can also sit in water for a month without any effect. This is why I lined our fridge compartment along with the engine compartment.
