Service Reviews Nac and elsewhere

We have finished our service list for our "new to us" year 2000 U295 3600 coach and we are now back in Tucson.  We purchased the coach on February 4 and moved in the next day.  Since then we've spent time in League City, Nacogdoches, and McKinney Texas getting various things done.  This has given us quite of bit of experience over a short period with the coach and with various service providers.  The following are some brief reviews based on our experience.

1.   World Line Motors:  This was our first stop in Nac.  We had some work done on the engine (two small oil leaks, fluid/filter changes, etc) and also had the airbags replaced, plus the seals replaced in the hydraulic fan motors.  I keep a log of my experiences with Bernd and crew (7 pages).  I won't bore you with the details.  But the bottom line is that I would never allow Bernd or any of his employees to work on my coach again.  Going to WLM was a huge mistake on my part.

2.   Motorhomes of Texas:  First class services from Keith Risch and his crew.  They serviced our brakes, reinforced the rear bulkhead, installed a new water pump, serviced the front end, and a few other things.  Good quality control checks under Keith and I learned a lot watching and asking questions.  I love the "open" shop!  Eric Barnes the Service Manager was also a pleasure to work with.  The only downside is that MOT has very little overnight space available.  The new facility across the street is large but is packed with sale coaches leaving little room for overnight stays.

3.   MCD Innovations:  This was an "all is well that ends well" experience.  We arrived on Sunday and the measurements were completed early Monday.  We were hoping for a faster turnaround since we were the only coach waiting, but it still took 5 days.  The Wi-Fi was horrible (little else to do while waiting) and the communication with the staff about the status of our order was not much better.  But Calvin the installer was great to work with and very good at what he does.  The blinds are really nice.

4.   Nacogdoches Motorhome Services:  This is a new RV service business in Nac started by three guys from MOT last August.  They agreed to install our Roadmaster towing system with the Brake Master braking system.  Earlier FOT had agreed to do the work and asked me to order the parts from eTrailer.com.  I did that and had it shipped second day, but then they could not do the install because they were backed up.  Fortunately, Bruce Oliver at NMS agreed to do the install on short notice (~3 days ahead). Dave and Seth Whitehead did a nice job of installing the system and got it done over 2 days.  All three were a pleasure to work with.  They represent a lot of years of experience with MOT and I think they are willing and able to do most types of motorhome service.  They already seem to have a lot of business.  Would I go back?  Definitely.

5.   Foretravel:  As mentioned above, I tried to have some work done there, but it just didn't work out.  I also inquired early on about having some of the other service done there, but I was told the next available appointment was about two months out!  However the parts guys were great to work with and we spent quite a bit over there, especially for larger, hard to ship items like a new ladder and a mud flap.  We also had Dave Flanagan inspect our residential refrigerator that has been installed elsewhere.  What a great guy.  And we had one of the techs rewire one of our ATS units that had defective wiring... perfection.  We stayed quite a few nights at Camp Foretravel.  Most of the time we were the only occupied coach in the lot.  I continue to be amazed at how large the new Foretravels are.

6.  eTrailer.com:  As mentioned above, we bought our Roadmaster towing package from them.  They seem to be very knowledgeable.  My order was complete and they shipped when they said they would.  I had a couple of questions after it was installed and they were very helpful.  The sites have some very helpful videos on the installation of the stuff they sell.

Sounds like you did pretty good. Even in CBC (Coach Buck City) you get treated right or blown off. Some firms don't get how mouthy we can all be (especially in the day of the internet) and we're especially mouthy when screwed over. Here's a note I got from a shop in Phoenix: I passed.

There is also Infinity in Nac for some remodel  and Beau Reese for mechanic work if Diesel engine is topic.

This a broad and complex topic, often hinging on parts costs and availability, special and general expertise at a shop, ability to take emergency road calls, depth of knowledge on specialized topics, such as electrical.  Relationships take time and contact to develop and may pay dividends for customer and the service provider.

Yes, there are always two sides to every story.  That is what I thought going into WLM for service.  Hoping for the best.  Unfortunately, it was worse than I could have imagined.  And now I am faced with taking my coach into Cummins to have the work done by WLM checked.  I'm sure it won't be cheap, but better then getting "bit" again.

John...  Thus far others, who have worked or inspected the engine have found two brackets, one for a pump (lower left of the engine) and the other for the fuel filter, that were loose.  The bolts were not tight at best and in one case one bolt was actually missing.  Both of these were removed and reinstalled by Bernd's mechanic.  What else is loose or damaged?  And then there is the fuel line that cracked, also removed and reinstalled by Bernd's mechanic.  So it is hard to know what other problems are lurking on the engine.  I'm especially concerned about the fuel lines.

Best thing to do is get the spare line/lines and keep the engine super clean to spot leaks and to work on it easier.

Cant say on the other parts or repairs but the fuel line looked old to begin with.. if it was removed and put back on again.. could have been the root cause .. but I am behind a keyboard so its just a guess..

Sad to hear about the other parts being loose or missing bolts.. sure they didnt miss it? How do you know they did anything with it to begin with? What was wrong initially?

Sorry I am just wondering.

I've owned a service biz as big as those, and the blame goes uphill. I'd not be happy, but Bernd has a good rep, and, were I him, I sure as hell would want to know about it!

David...  they took all this stuff off to find one of the oil leaks behind the gear housing.  I was there.  And of course, the loose brackets and split fuel line are not the only adverse issues that happened during my brief experience with World Line Motors.  Of course, my experience could be atypical.  But I doubt it.

Not sure why you didn't let Bernd know about your problems. He stands behind his work, far better than Cummins does. If you happened to notice a black, silver and Sea foam green foretravel setting in his yard, that is ours and Bernd has been fighting for over a year to get us back up and on the road. You think you have problems, try an ISX POS Engine. Bernd has rebuilt the whole damn engine, worked on the bloody emission system multiple times, only to have it screw up things again. Cummins had our engine in for, guess what, emission system problems and helped screw it up worse the spring of 17. They didn't even give a rodents rear end about having messed up when Bernd went to bat for us. We have 30 coach bucks in that bloody engine and it is still waiting for Cummins to come through with an assist. Bernd has bent over backwards trying everything he can think of to fix our engine. I have faith that in the end, we will get our coach back with an engine that works properly. If it does, it is only because Bernd didn't give up.

I have talked to Bernd several times about my problems.  Suffice it to say, my experience has been much different than yours.  When I pay someone $125 per hour to work on my coach I expect that person to do the job right and above all, not cause more problems than they solve.  As I said above, never again.  With WLM you occasionally hear good things, which is why I went there in the first place.  But you also hear about nightmare situations that should never happen.  Thankfully we got out of there without too much damage to our coach and wallet!

Good luck with your coach!

Maybe Bernd could respond? Maybe Pugmom could find out? This is a cliff hanger and I dont get it.. Something isnt adding up as to why he would fight for someone and not the other? Maybe you didnt spend enough?

I'm done.  I just wanted everyone to know MY experience with some service providers.  That was the rationale for the original post.  I consider myself to be a reasonable person and I try to be careful and accurate in any service review I write whether it be an RV park, RV service, restaurant, or whatever.  The bottom line is that I am very dissatisfied with the service I got at WLM.  I'm fairly sure it will continue to cost me in the future.  That was my experience.  Someone else may have a much different experience.  Hey, that is why I went to Bernd's shop in the first place... a friend who is an experienced RVer recommended him.  Even Bernd is not 100% bad, but I would not want to play the odds by having him work on my coach again.
