Patriot 2 and retarder question

Looking at using a Patriot 2 in the towed.  We have two vehicles set up for towing.  I believe it is a surge system.  Will it activate from the retarder on 5-6 plus descents?  Want to avoid heat issues.  Any problems with battery charge?

I would avoid surge brakes and brakes activated by the brake lights (using retarder turns on brake lights) as they can be activated by the retarder.  I have been using M&G braking system on my toad and have been very happy with it. It is only activated when the brakes are applied on the motorhome.  See it at PRODUCTS | M&G Engineering | Car Braking Systems For RVs

Thanks jbeem.  The price point with two systems makes this a great option.
