Front wheel bearing oil type

Our 91 GV on an Oshkosh chassis has the Spicer front axel with the transparent end cap to check oil level.  The maintenance manual says that for axels with the transparent end cap to use a 90 weight mineral oil.  Does this ring a bell for anyone, it is news to me.  I know that I have added an 85-90 gear oil in the past.  The Freightliner people didn't know and simply stated that the new rigs they are familiar with use a synthetic gear oil.  (guess I should not have read the book).  Oh well---- It isn't leaking, so it must be OK.  Have a great day  ----  Fritz

The bearings will work with either oil, but 85/140 is much more common. Don't mix them if you think you still have mineral oil in them. Drain and put in the oil you will be using in the rear end then you don't need 2 types of oil for servicing. If you are ever passing through Los Angeles I can give you a couple of gallons of 85/140 as now that I am retired having 60 gallons sitting around ain't going to cut it.

The hub needed to be removed from the axle and completely cleaned out with the seals removed.

Sounds like the cleanout was not performed completely.  Or the bearing is failing.

Or synthetic oil was mixed with regular oil?  Or a combo of above.

Or incorrect bearing adjustment?

If synthetic gear oil and dino gear oil are mixed it is not a problem,it's a myth that it would be a problem.

It is the mineral gear oil that I was referring to from his post.
