Girard 2GWHAM Tankless Water Heater Error Code E6

I purchased this tankless water heater a couple of years ago. Giving up on installing it myself. I had it installed at MOT, in March 20018. Except for a couple of glitches along the way, it has worked pretty good. Lately, it has stopped putting out hot water, with an E6 error code display. According to the manual, an E6 error means: E6 Overtemperature. Outlet Water Temperature has exceeded 140 degrees Farenheit for 3 seconds.
 
This seems to occur most often when DW is taking a shower. In researching on the net, I found the following jewel:
 
Southern states in the summer time can get extremely warm water right out of the ground. When these conditions occur ensure that your water flow is proper.
 
I haven't had this problem before, but we have spent Jan and Feb in San Benito, TX, and have already booked ourselves for five months, starting in Nov 2020.
 
DW is not happy! Do any of you use tankless water heaters and have you experienced a similar problem?

I have used a tankless here at my home for 10 years now. With well water and above ground water. That means a temperature swing of 68 - 100 in peak summer temperatures. The high temp peak occurs in the first 75 feet of water pipe. Then it drops to 85 degrees as steady above ground water temperature.
A 3 sec reading sounds like sensor spike. I would first check unit ground. While researching where and how the temperature is sensed. Call maker, they can be very helpful in tech support. You may be surprised.

Trent,
      We have a Girard, have the E6 code a few times. I keep the set temp at 125, this helped us. Also stopped using the shutoff on the shower head, it helps if you turn water off slowly. And I opened the flow valve on the outlet fitting to full open.
Sorry I can't remember what water pump I installed, but it has more flow than the old one. I'm also going to install a expansion device for this problem, just haven't had the time. Hope this helps.

Trent, this may not be an issue, but if the water you have been using has a high mineral content you will need to disconnect the heater fill it with white vinegar and let it set for 24 hours then flush out,  if buildup is severe you may have to do this a couple of times to get it cleaned out. 
Depending on your set up you may be able to go this without removing heater.

We have a tankless hot water heater in our home and the manufacture recommends setting the temp setting as low as you can. As other said the 120-125 range is a good setting. You don't want the temp so high that the flow drops to almost zero when mixed with the cold water at the shower.

I would recommend trying a lower set point like 110-115 if your hot water supply is warm as in the summer months down south. You need to have adequate flow through the coils to keep the temp constant and below the high temp set point.
