Shepherd box finished

The play I had was calculated to be at least 2" +5 balls installed.

Excellent.  Let us know how much it tightened up steering play.

I wonder what they meant by +5 balls installed.  + 0.0005" which is a lot, or 0.005mm which is .000198"?

I believe, but not sure it is just a numbering system for the balls.

Last job we had, had an Escomatic department.  The thing about Esco is they never designed in a way to easily remove the bearing races.  So we kept a stock of bearing balls in 0.0001" increments.  That experience leads me to believe that +5 means plus 0.0005"
That's all.

So how does the new box drive?

Their method of redoing the box is fuel for sending it to them and not elsewhere.

Possibly because mine wasn't leaking and I told them I was curious about the play in the steering wheel was why I was sending it to them. Along with eliminating a leak later on.

Mine was pulled out just because.. Wanted to make sure it wasnt a problem with the steering as I replaced everything else with new..

my sheppard had 140,000 miles on it when replaced - not leaking - took the about 1/'2 out of the last 1" in  steering wheel play out. Previously had gone through front end and replaced many front end parts, more of the play was attributed to worn ojut front end parts in my opinion than red head - that was icing on the cake...

Love the way I go down the road now...
