Every 3rd valve installation is a little different. You need to look at how your dump pipe is situated, and how much room you have to work with. The most simple procedure would be as you state: cut off the Thetford and glue the Valterra on the remaining pipe. Other installations require more work. A search of the Forum for "third dump valve" will bring up many threads.My installation was very simple.
