Battery bay liner

While cleaning the bays out, the battery bay appears to be coated with some sort of protective coating. It is chipped thru in a couple of spots. I'm assuming the coating is to protect against acid fumes from the batteries. Any ideas what this is & where to get some?

Thanks,
Larry

The interior surfaces are most likely Filon, a fiberglass sheet material.  You can get new material and glue it down over the old. If it has chipped up it probably doesn't hurt anything.

Roger, this looks like a pastey type of paint. Underneath is the normal fiberglass. If it didn't have a couple of ridges sticking up, I would have thought it was just black paint.

Then someone painted it with something.  If you have sealed batteries you shouldn't need any coating

Sounds like old time asphaltum.  I used to buy it at the hardware store to paint battery trays and protect them against the acid.
