Eaton rear axle oil change on my 1990 granvilla

Hya all, and a happy new year,  I'm in the process of changing my eaton rear axle oil, I've drained off the old oil today and tomorrow I intend to refill with new oil, however, there is something I'm not sure of, obviously the blanking plug at the bottom is the drain off, then I have another plug above that, and then there is another one above that again, so I'm not sure why there is two plugs above the drain off plug, gear oil is horrible smelly stuff, so tommmorrow I'm gonna run a long unused hose pipe from the axle and run it underneath and then bring it up quite high and attach a funnel and fill by grafity, however I'm not sure which is the fill plug hole, I would presume the top one, but then I'm thinking why is it necessary to have 2 fill holes, anyone advise me on this please, il upload photo as well thanks kev

Either is the fill hole.

The "fill to hole" level depends on the angle of installation-- consult Eaton to verify which hole to fill to with your angle of installation.

And, gear lube generally comes in "squeeze bottles".  I cut one cap with a large opening and use it to drain all the bottles.  Pretty clean and doesn't waste (stinky) oil.

The extra hole is used on highway trucks for a gear oil temp sensor.

The fill level is the plug even with the axles ends. The oil barely runs out the axle withe drive flange off.

OK thanks for that info, I read in the manual that it holds 10& 1/2 quarts, so will just close of the lower hole and fill with a large hole pipe connected to a large opening bottle like you said, once I've used the recommended quantity, il close it off and finished thanks for that info,

I wouldn't close off the lower hole unless you learn it is not the fill-to hole.
